Florida's DL vs Alabama

A lot of people aren't fully aware, but Florida adopted a formation just for teams like Alabama this year.
The 5-2. The only run straight at you team they played so far was UT, who had 29 yards on 23 carries.
The starting unit on the line for the 5-2:
DE Justin Trattou - Sr - 6'4 255
DT Jaye Howard - Jr - 6'3 302
DT Omar Hunter - So - 6-0, 307
DT Sharrif Floyd - Fr - 6'3, 301
DE Duke Lemmens - Sr - 6'3 250
The back ups which see a lot of time
DE Ronald Powell - Fr - 6'4 248
DT Terron Sanders - Sr - 6'1 309
DT Brandon Antwine - Sr - 6'0 290
DT Lawrence Marsh - Sr - 6'5 290
DE/LB Brandon Hicks - Sr - 6'2 230
It's a powerful unit, and the addition of the freshmen and the return to health of Antwine and Marsh makes UF a very strong front.
Whether they'll slow down Alabama is up for debate at this point. The key is really LB play. UF missed a lot of tackles in the loss last year.

From here on out JJ, Maze and Dial are going to have to step up big time.

My only concern with that formation is that it seems all or nothing up front. If they don't bring down Ingramson and our LBs miss then LOOK OUT cause it's gonna get taken to the house.

There is a lot of chess play between Meyer and Saban. Meyer tried to run the 4-6 bear like AU did in the SECCG. Saban changed our D specifically for UF.
FWIW I think this was a good move by Meyer. If the LB's can make the adjustments.

You realize bama runs out of a spread formation right?
5 2... who's matching up on hanks, dial or do you take a safety away from Julio or Maze?
If McElroy gets his head out of his arse that's an easy formation to get them out of with 3 wide and Dial/Williams at TE.

you realize florida will not be set up in 5-2 the entire game

My point is he's stating this is a formation specifically designed to stop Alabama, and my point is with only 4 secondary how do you expect to cover 3 Wrs and a TE..
I'm throwing bubble screens to Julio against that formation or quick slants to hanks.
Just saying...

Jaye Howard moves to DE in the 5-2.
It goes Howard, Hunter, Floyd, Marsh, Trattou.

Right Lemmens was at LB in that formation right? I forgot about that.

The extra lineman should help, but yeah, they need to show up ready to play for sure. DL included.

Our ability to run this 5-2 depends heavily on the skill of our secondary to cover those type of plays. Our coaches at this point are obviously pretty confident in them by even running this formation.
If we get burned then I guess we won't use it much more. But make no mistakes, Bama's meat and potatoes is the ground game and they are going to try to break our will by pounding no matter what we run.

The coaches said that they specifically designed the formation for Alabama. That is why it exists.
I think Florida would be happier having Alabama line up in a more spread out formation.
So I think they will play the 5-2 when Alabama goes big, but will slide back into their normal nickel or 4-3 when they spread it out.
Also, UF feels pretty confident, even in the 5-2, of having their DBs in single coverage.

We'll probably have Powell at LB. His size and speed could present a problem for their passing game
And he can actually cover a TE.

Use play action to freeze the DBs, get a pulling block from one of the tackles in the middle, get the RB to the 2nd level and force a LB to make a play in space. If he makes the tackle, it's a 4 yard gain...if not, it's a 1st down.
I'll take Ingram or Richardson over any LB in the SEC in a 1-on-1 situation and win most of the time.

Jesus. Florida's DL is full of men.

I like our chances against a 5-2. When we are able to break through the line of scrimmage and into the defensive backfield, you better hope for a miracle.

Put 5 down on us and we will throw on you all day long. Our RB's will become a blocking back and our recievers will be in man coverage all day. I look forward to seeing the game this weekend. It will be a chess match for sure between the two best coaches in the league.
