Kiffin WILL get UT back on track

I honestly think that I am the only person on this board (thats not a Vol fan) that thinks Lane Kiffin will get UT back in the SEC East picture.
I would not want him as my teams coach, but what he is doing up in Knoxville will work. He assembled a quality coaching staff and will continue to do well recruiting. Their 2010 class is thin right now, but will pick up. They have too much money and too much tradition at that program to let him crash and burn.
He is arrogant right now, but after a few humbling losses this season I think he will get the point and adapt to how SEC football is supposed to be played and how our coaches are supposed to conduct themselves. I'm not saying he is going to win championships, but he definately has gotten the Vols back in the spotlight. Regardless, god that guy is an obnoxious prick.

Why? Programs with more tradition and money (or as much) than UT have crashed and burned for a good long period.
Bama, UGA, FSU, Miami, ND, Southern Cal, LSU, AU etc...all had their periods of suckitude. UT is gonna get theirs...

The Vols will get back to the top at some point, I just think it will happen when Lane is an afterthought.

UT has a lot going for them, but Lane Kiffin isn't part of it. One bad head coach can screw up the whole shebang.

The thing is nobody really knows since he doesn't have experience as a college head coach.

That is very true. But if Kiffin can continue to recruit well (and stay off probation) I do think he has the staff to translate talent into wins. It all comes down to recruiting the best players for your system.
And if Kiffin does happen to be the SEC's new version of Coach O, then the coach that comes in and takes over in four years will have loads of talent. Vol fans should have high expectations.

If he doesn't get them on probation first

But is there a plan . . .
This is critical.
This is critical.

I think he'll win some ball games at UT. Will he do well enough to unseat Florida in the East? Probably not, but honestly what coach could right now?

That's the truth. Kiffin is coming in at the right time. He will get roughed up this season, but after Tebow leaves the East is open for a shift. Could be UGA's turn next, but we will see.

+1.
shite, look at the late 80's and early 90's for LSU. And 1998 and 99. All awful for us. Southern Cal was down then as well. ND has been going through that for some time, and FSU and Miami are down right now.
Bama had their issues this decade.
Everyone gets a turn. It blows, but most big time programs eventually recover.
I just don't see Kiffin being that guy. UT, IMO, royally fricked up by not throwing the kitchen sink at Brian Kelly.

I still think it was terrible how they ran Fulmer out the way they did. I heard Clawson speak at a function literally a month or two before they canned them all, and he sounded really upbeat about the future of the program. He kept hinting that they didn't have the players to run the offense yet. It all comes down to recruiting the right players.

After 2005, Fulmer had no room for error.

BINGO!
Fulmer really had gotten stale. he lost his recruiting knack and seemed to be coasting. remember, UT was in the '07 SECCG. kiffin did a very good job recruiting in his first class. if he keeps that up, UT will be a force to be reckoned with (provided his "super-recruiters" can coach). Monte is huge for them if he can put up with dealing with college kids. as we get older (i know this for a fact; ha-ha), dealing with immaturity gets to be difficult. i have reservations about any of their coaches being stellar coaches.

That's what all the fans kept saying. Not having the right pieces in place does ultimately fall on the head coach. As an outsider looking in, I just couldn't think of a sure fire replacement. Never fire a coach until you have a better replacement.

you must not remember how Majors was run out. Fulmer was one of his asst. coaches and I think Major's last words were "et tu Phillip". as far as I'm concerned, you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

A little before my time, but I have heard the story. They say that Knoxville is still divided on that and the old Majors supporters were the driving force behind Fulmers departure.
