Admittedly I don’t know many women’s basketball coaches outside the 5-6 usual top teams but what is everyone’s reason for the Troy coach being a bad hire ?

I like her a lot more than that Troy HC. Hopefully she does well here.

Great! She can recruit. That is a valuable asset to have. But can she coach? From what I can tell this is her first job as the head coach. You can recruit all day long, but if you don’t know how to coach it up its all for naught. Only time will tell. She may turn out to be the next Dawn Staley, but the hire is not exactly a splash.

I hope I'm wrong but I'm underwhelmed. I wish Byrne had forked over a little more gotten a proven winner.

I’m with you Amarillo. Not exactly a Greg Byrne home run. Did we just go cheap?

We are literally 16/16 in spending on women’s hoops in the league. We are by definition cheap haha.

Hopefully she does well, Curry had the program in a good spot given the resources she was given. Here’s hoping Coach Love can do the same. Roll Tide

You’re not going to hire like that when you program loses 5 million a year. Not being a jerk about it but it has to make business sense

Yep. It's women's college basketball. Spending big on a proven winner who consistently gets your program in the top 25 and makes a few deep runs in the tournament is still going to lose your athletics department money. You have to be a truly elite program, which means regularly being a top ~5 team in women's basketball, to have a shot at breaking even or coming close enough that the brand exposure justifies the deficit. The smart move is to rotate through up and comers and hope one develops into a championship caliber coach. Then you reassess spending.

Not trying to be a smart arse, I truly don't know — does any women's basketball team, anywhere, at any level (including college and pro) make an annual profit?

I would think that close to 100% operate at a loss and are subsidized in some way.
