From former player, Martin Houston.

“They still work under the same auspice of the football strength and conditioning coach," Houston said. "I guess, to me, the same thing that got Alabama whooped this year in football is the same thing that has gotten Nate Oats whooped every year in basketball. And this year, it’s probably more obvious in these two sports because it’s all or nothing. They don’t have the physical makeup, mentally or physically, to execute other than that.”

He played over 30 years ago. He has no idea about modern strength and conditioning.
This is the same as any other 50 year old saying “rub some dirt on it”

So are you saying he is wrong about our strength program?

I think anyone drawing S&C comparisons between sports is an absolute crank.

I have been beating this drum for some time now.

Definitely understand that but the reality if we physically can't keep intensity and that has been the growing situation since Ballou came

I don’t understand. What football’s strength and conditioning program does has absolutely no bearing over what our basketball program does? Two separate entities, facilities, coaches, etc.

There are plausible alternative explanations to that though: we have simply had diminished talent identification and development in the late Saban era and it started to show up on the field in 2021-23 but arguably reached its zenith in 2024-25. We've almost totally flushed out the recruiting misses of the late Saban era now and most of the remaining players from that cohort are contributors. I think we start to have a more holistic picture if you believe that DeBoer is hiring high quality staff. Frankly, we're more apt to arrive at a "restart the whole program" answer than "S&C needs to be replaced."

I’m saying he isn’t knowledgeable enough to critique it and neither are you and I. We watch the games. We don’t have sports science degrees and we’re not watching the players workout.
I tend to blame scheme and coaching more than strength and conditioning. I think it’s caveman type shite to chalk it up to “they aren’t tough enough anymore. We never lost while Cochran was here”.

Basketball has their own strength coach.

There is a reason Martin Houston is on the 6-7am timeslot on the local radio. He is still weekly bringing up reasons why Milroe had problems and even tells his sons on the show that they don't know what they are talking about because he was a Bama player. He is very full of himself. All of this is hearsay from me though because I won't listen to him.
With that being said, our strength and conditioning in football sucks, but those basketball guys are up and down the floor as much as any team, they made be strong some teams but are stronger than most. I don't know where he gets how the same guys are over both programs.

Loved watching Martin Houston play.
Don’t know if he’s in tune with current S&C, but I’d defy anyone to watch our football team this past year and claim we physically were a tough team. That to me is a reflection of the attitude of the coaching staff and/or the S&C staff.

That's right. And don't every question me on theology. I have a seminary degree. Just listen to what I tell you.

Sports science is a degree? When I went to bama, they had exercise science for students to take classes in to raise their GPA’s.

Talent has nothing to do with desire and drive. Off-season workouts build that and a toughness and this is what we have slowly lost yet people seem to think it's only the talent or position coach or head coach.
We have changed all of those things and there is only one constant. Our S&C program

The thing is that poor technique from bad on-field coaching can make strong guys look weak and fast guys look slow.
It is hard to tease those two apart in my opinion.
