The Athletic - NCAA confirms it is looking into Dabo Swinney’s tampering accusations against Ole Miss

This was a paywall article, then it wasn't. So if it paywall's on some of you I'm sorry.

quote:

Dabo Swinney made national headlines last week when the Clemson coach publicly accused Ole Miss coach Pete Golding of “blatant” tampering.

Now he’s hoping for a quick resolution.

The NCAA confirmed to The Athletic via a statement Monday night that it is involved in the matter. Though the organization did not provide specifics, officials have been in direct contact with Clemson about Swinney’s allegations.

“The NCAA will investigate any credible allegations of tampering and expect full cooperation from all involved as is required by NCAA rules,” NCAA vice president of enforcement Jon Duncan said in the statement. “We will not comment further on any ongoing investigation.”

quote:

“The NCAA quite frankly was surprised that a school was willing to come forward as directly and transparently as we have,” Neff said. “Normally, there’s a lot of complaints in the media, hearsay amongst the industry, etcetera. Very little actually gets reported (from the schools). That’s coming from the NCAA directly. And so we’re very eager and resolute to do so.”

The NCAA processed 90 tampering cases last year, but this is the highest-profile of its kind, with Swinney taking the rare step of publicly going on the record with accusations against another sitting head coach.

Golding's text was essentially the equivalent of "you up?"

If a player is on a roster and not in the transfer portal, opposing coaches/school cannot make contact. Golden allegedly texted Linebacker Luke Ferrelli after he had signed a financial aid agreement with Clemson. Sent him a text in his 8 Am class at Clemson saying, "I know you're signed, what's the buyout?" Apparently Clemson has copies of the text message and supplied them to the NCAA. Luke Ferrelli reentered the transfer portal and is now enrolled at Ole Miss.

Has anyone seen them, or did he state this is 100% what he did. Dabo talked outside both sides of his mouth.

I know Golding contacted this particular player directly, but I’m curious and don’t know the answer… is it legal to contact a player’s agent if the player is not in the portal?

While I personally haven't seen them, in his Friday Press conference on the matter, he had a complete timeline of events down to the minute. I'd say he was been truthful on the matter.

Black Bears have convinced themselves that their silence ever since being called out at a level never done before is simply refusing to acknowledge something that never happened

Based on this, I would say it is not. (emphasis added)

quote:

Bylaw 13.1.1.3 — Contact with Student-Athletes at Another NCAA Division I Institution

“An athletics staff member or other representative of the institution’s athletics interests shall not communicate or make contact with the student-athlete of another NCAA Division I institution, or any individual associated with the student-athlete (e.g., family member, scholastic or nonscholastic coach, advisor), directly or indirectly, without first obtaining authorization through the notification of transfer process.”

Is an agent an "advisor"? I don't know if they are technically, but my intuition is to say yes they are.

Hard not to talk to players when you are coaching their team.

Go for it.

As much as I hate to say it, Dabo addressed this too in his presser when he said "The response that came out of Mississippi was 'Well people are calling and texting our guys' to that he replied "Right is right even when nobody does it. And wrong is wrong even when everybody does it."

He also challenged other coaches to report what they know. "If not, don't complain".

Maybe Pete can name names when the NCAA comes to speak with him.

The NCAA didn’t do anything to Michigan when they had ample evidence of literal cheating. They won’t do anything to us.

And if your argument is “yEaH bUt YoUrE oLe MiSs!!” then you don’t have an argument so dong waste your breath please
