So coaching and playing the games still matter.

Did those portal rankings use avg per player or just total score (meaning more players adds up but may not be best per player)

Portal rankings are even more meaningless in the bag chasing era we are in now.

3 million for Cam Coleman and theres no guarantee he will produce anything other than a fumble against Bama.

No… I have read here that having a high ranked portal class is the only hope for success. It is the future. You shouldn’t even recruit highschoolers.

Is this the official Smothers/Coleman melt thread for the Gumps?

Enjoy your 17 wide receivers and zero quarterbacks and offensive linemen.

I think what it means is in this day and age of NIL AND portal, lots of teams will have players but the SEC has focused on recruiting instead of coaching.

These other teams have better coaching and now they are buying some players.

SEC will not win until it changes from hiring recruiters to coaches. NIL will get most of the SEC Enough talent, at least half the teams anyway to win a title but if the coaching does not improve the SEC will not win.

You're right. Id rather us be LSU and miss them entirely for years.

We don’t need to see Bama, Tech, Tulane, or JMU in the playoffs again.

You can't look at portal alone.

You need composite talent ratings of recruiting plus portal.

Looks like higher portal rankings are starting to matter

I think the bigger issue is all these HS kids are going to soon quit being recruited as much due to the fact of how many of them are leaving after 1 or 2 years.

That's quite a bit of money schools are spending on a player only for them to leave after developing them. And that's true before you even take NIL into account.

What you really want is a good HS recruit that you can develop over time and then one day reap the rewards of that, aka the old way. But you want one that's actually going to stick around and with 1/3rd of all players entering the transfer portal every year, that's not happening. Over 3 years, it seems the odds of a keeping a single player is low.

Schools are getting screwed over, they don't have basic protections on their "investments". All schools because all schools are forced to partake in it. Yeah you grab some guy from another team, but you losing them as well.

They talk about going up to 105 scholarships or whatever, but it seems more likely a team should drop down to 55 or whatever the bare minimum needed is and just let other teams spend the money to develop/babysit the players. I think it's 53 in the NFL right?

The entire system makes no sense. And that's about all I can say without getting political about the sad state of colleges across the country and the quality of education they are putting out. They are ate up from the ground up.

Yep, trending upward every season. Indiana is proof it is tough to win with 18 and 19 year olds against 22-23 year olds. Most of those older guys have come through the portal, I would think.

LSU’s portal ranking and record:

2025: #1, # 2; 7-6
2024: #41, #49; 9-4
2023: #5, #9; 10-3

That $21 million dollar transfer class cost you an additional $120 million in buyouts and salaries.

Instead of learning from it, LSU has doubled down.
