Why is anyone surprised that anyone would consider extra money in the free agent market? I'm not at "you can't blame him" yet, but certainly am not shocked. If anyone thinks these young men are loyal To any school they are naive. It is all transactional.

Folks have to make a choice, watch the new UGA professional team or find something else to do. I would advise my son to get every penny he could.

It would take a lot of self reflection to plunge the depths of why people love college football but there’s a reason the average capacity of NFL stadiums is around 60,000 and they’re focused in major cities….and even then don’t sell out that often.

I agree with you. Our players aren't gladiators, Kirby isn't emporer and we aren't plebians.
But in this case it's apparently not about money as much as it is the work conditions.

You get a brand new team every year! Might be great ..might suck. Never know.
Glad we got to be part of the last days of college ball.

UGA football has been a life time of enjoyment. I hope the new all for money era works, I have my doubts, longterm.

I would like to think my connection to my team and its players is the common thread....the University. The players, fans, and coaches should love their school.
It means more than wins and losses. The introduction of this hired gun shite is sad. I don't fault folks for taking advantage but I just can't believe we are gonna allow this to this extent.
Something must be done or we will lose connection to the team we love. It will be like an nfl team.
Hell why even make them go to class
shite is fricking stupide

This is a different perspective than mine, so I can understand why you might see it differently.
Both of my parents have degrees from UGA, but my emotional connection has always been to UGA athletics and not UGA the school. There are roughly 250,000 UGA alumni currently living in Georgia, but there are several million Georgia football fans in Georgia. So I guess there are way more sidewalk fans like me who don't see the transer portal as something that would make them quit being Georgia football fans.

At least for me, I will still love the school and the team but will not give them my eyeballs (= $$). I’ll follow from a distance and find something else to do with my Saturdays.

I also love the school and the team, but if we reach a point where it’s a bunch of new kids every year that transferred in it will kill my interest. Part of the fun for me is following the young recruits, watch them get better when they start playing and wanting to see what they can do next year and how good they can get.
When they leave early or you get some dude from the portal and insert them ahead - that takes away a lot of my enjoyment in the sport.

My parents didn’t attend but were longtime season ticket holders. I “grew up” as a fan but now I am an alum.
I’m an OKST fan because I am an alum.
My football loyalties follow my matriculation.

Just saw a post two minutes ago saying he is returning. Wonder what that cost? I’ll certainly be extra critical of his performance next season.

Supposedly it had to do with worplace conditions and not getting along with his supervisor (running backs coach) moreso than money.

The new system is destroying what made college football unique. It will just be NFL (Saturday) but with marching bands.
I suspect what will happen (and may have been the goal all along) is that there will be a re-layering of the sport between the schools that have the bankroll to afford to pay players millions of dollars and those who don't. The big money schools will form/coopt a few conferences and have an expanded playoff.
The other schools will take other conferences, have a regular season with some bowl games at the end, and be where most of the player development takes place, with the top talent moving up to the big money league after 1-3 years.
People will still watch it all, but it won't have the passion that the previous version had.

Just like the NFL, people won't be throwing their TV out the window with a regular season loss. This is true.
I guess I'll pick my favorite college team when that happens, but UGA will still be my favorite pro-team.
Edit- probably Kennesaw State for my favorite college team since I grew up there and did a summer semester to pick up a math credit when I was going to UGA.

The 3 star athlete going on full ride scholarship to the eventual major conferences is going to come to an end. Only 4 and 5 stars will get those full rides to current major conferences. Most of the 3 stars will go to the other conferences with hopes of being picked up in the portal after 2-3 years. Most of them will get minimal financial incentives. The game will be “we give you a shot to prove you belong in the top tier” along with an opportunity for a degree.
The 3 star or less HS player is probably the ones with the most to lose moving forward. So many of those guys always got thrown into recruiting classes to fill the available scholarships. Now, with a few exceptions, big time schools will just fill them through the portal. A combination of players from major conference teams and the emerging developmental conferences.
Actually, it won’t be surprising to see major conference teams start partnering with 1-2 smaller conference teams as developmental programs. Like Michigan really interested in a certain 3 star safety but wants to see more development. Persuade him to go to their partner at Eastern Michigan with a promise of transfer and good pay if he develops to their liking. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the big programs funnel some money to smaller programs to help keep them operating as a developmental program.

I certainly am not going to quit being a fan, but you're insane if you can't see that this modern iteration we have is a disaster compared to what it was, whether you attended the University or not.
I assume anyone posting on message boards is beyond just an average joe fan. The life cycle of a diehard message board poster used to go something like this, give or take:
-Start casually remembering names to watch for HS juniors once you keep seeing their name repeated often enough
-During senior year of HS really start to follow the prospects that UGA is in on. Live and die with their recrutiment. Where are they visiting? How did they do on Friday? The whole year leads up to February (or as of late, December then February) to see who's joining your team
-Now the real fun begins since they're on your team officially. Intently watch these ~25 newcomers through spring practice for the early enrollees. Who's fighting for PT?
-Back in the old day, you'd expect most to redshirt unless they were truly an elite of the elite kind of guy at a postiion of need. Maybe if he was good neough he'd get some mopup duty as a freshman. Sophomore year hopefully he's cracked the 2 deep and is seeing some meaningful snaps. Junior year a starter. Senior year hoepfully all-something caliber. And if you go back even just ~20 years or so, some guys might even stay for their 5th RS Senior year just because they wanted to help the program.
-All that to say...you followed guys from when they were 16/17 all the way through to their leaving the program. It was FUN, and you got attached to their careers adn their stories.
Now fast forward to present day and it's something liek this:
-Who cares about HS recruiting anyway? 1/3 will decommit, 1/3 will sign but never play and transfer for more money, and 1/3 will stay on your team. Who knows which ones are which
-IF you have promising underclassmen, there's a 50/50 chance they leave for more money. You have to constantly pay them more money just to keep them on the roster
-If you have glaring holes in the offseason, jsut go get someone from another team. They coudl be from tech, UF, AU, whoever. You may or may not have even heard of him until just now.
How can anyone say with a straight face that that way is better than the former? I pull for the G on the helmet so I"ll always watch and always root for them, but my emotional attachment gets less and less with each passing year.

The numbers that I found online show the following per recruiting class:
5*- less than 50, .01% of each class
4*- less than 400, 13% of each class
That's not enough to fill the SEC, much less all of P4.
3*- 44% of each recruiting class.
The above are averages, and each class can fluctuate slightly.
