I understand that it now means that you feel disrespected or feel like they have something to prove, but that seems like a relatively new thing.

Only thing I found on the interweb is a reference to carrying off lumber from a job site each day as a sort of extra benefit.

Fight term. Put a wooden chip on your shoulder and dare someone to knock it off. Old term.

ETA: We used to challenge folks to fights/ duels in this country versus shooting them at random or sucker punching/ pile jumping in the street.

Kind of like that old battery commercial, where a tough guy actor put what I think was a Duracell battery on his shoulder and dared someone to knock it off.

Can’t remember who that was??

The original term is from early 1800s. Where wood chips were readily available, and I reckon it applied to most of the hardscrabble types, male or female.

Politicians and wealthy men had pistol duels. Most were poor shots. A few could take a bullet, given the medicine at the time.

This Deadwood fight scene is from 60 years later than the coining of the term of “chip on the shoulder”

Great episode even if you have no clue about the series. About an hour of drama leading up to fight.

Dan was a dog that could be coached. The captain was a high priced “dude”.

I know how to read, understand, and present two distinct timeframes in American History to you while explaining it fully.

My rate is $5000/ hour if you want more because stupid is 1000% in your DNA and time is limited.
