How did this coach put this team together with hardly any 4 or 5 stars? Is he just hitting on all the 3 stars he took in the portal?

It's called "developing talent". That is a novel idea.

4 and 5 stars are the early developers. There are always some 3 stars that will develop later and catch them, trick is figuring out which ones.

Trying to think of any team with this few of blue chippers winning a legit championship. He must be great at picking out talent that others can't see. Most portal guys he got were 3 stars

1983 Miami was mostly a bunch of unknowns, which is why everyone was so stunned at their championship run. Howard Schnellenberger built that program from nothing.

Many of his core players came with him to IU from a very good JMU team. Even with the talent drain, JMU still won the SBC and scored +30 on a very good Oregon defense. Coach C. teaches great fundamentals, has a great system, and recruits less-talented, but team oriented players.

Black (Kaelon) is also awesome though

2010 Oregon and 2015 Clemson are the closest since bcs era started. Both were less than 50 percent blue chip. 2010 auburn had the lowesr bc ratio amongst teams with a natty title since bcs started. 96 uf was the last team to win a title with less than 50 percent bc ratio.
