There is some talk that Alabama will, surprisingly, implement a crude version of Bryant's old wishbone formations versus Indiana in the Rose Bowl.

It will only be a few snaps here and there to trick Indiana into thinking Alabama can run the ball. Simpson's mobility will be the bait to lure them in because the actual running backs never learned how to run.

Simpson will keep the ball in every scenario where this happens because, again, the running backs are virtually useless.

Throw the ball a lot

Run up the middle a few times

Run a gimmick play with your left tackle

Throw the ball more

Never encountered a dumber alter here outside of whiskey. The kind of humor you can only appreciate if you've suffered a horrible brain injury.

I wonder how many posters are around today that know how the wishbone works? QBs first read? 2nd read? Etc.
What are the 2 most demanding things for the defense to attack the bone?

The wishbone is just like a normal running scenario but it makes a triple option possible. In other words, it's an option based offense based on the run.

This means there are several different options to choose from. You've got the QB, the fullback right behind him, and two tailbacks on either side of the fullback, creating a Y shape.

Texas knows a thing or two about it if you want to ask our Texas posters about it. E-Man Bellard learned it from a high school coach, Spud Cason, in Ft. Worth, and then he became the Longhorns OC under head coach D-Dog Royal. Cason wasn't using the wishbone as it came to be known though, he was just using a modified T formation that was pretty damn close to the eventual wishbone.

After Bellard arrived in Austin, he changed Cason's formation around a bit, being heavily influenced by Bama and Texas A&M's options at that time and created a brand new formation called the wishbone.

Oddly enough, Bryant then went to visit Bellard and got the wishbone details and schemes from him that was used to such great effect for the Tide.

The defenders have so many choices they have to make so quickly that it is easy for them to make errors and immediately be double teamed allowing for chunks of yardage.

It's all over several boards; the news just hadn't made it here yet. I'm not really giving away the secret.

Yes, I've heard that too. The thing is, Bama has to win this game no matter what, so all options are on the table from what is being said.

You didn't hear it from me but, don't be surprised if the Flying Wedge makes a few appearances. What are they going to do, call a penalty on Alabama? By then, the bodies will be laying out and it will be too late anyway.

DeBoer keeps repeating to the players that THIS IS frickING WAR!

It's not hard to defend unless the other team has stud runners, fair to middlen line, and a smart athletic QB.
Two priorities for defense is, and in order...
1) tackle the fullback (1st QB read) always.
2) tackle the QB. Tackle him at his 2nd read which is the DE. Drop him with the ball, or make him pitch it. Either way, exhaust the offensive options and chase the HB down or drive the play east/west with chasing players.

In my day, all the Texas high schools ran the wishbone. Started to get figured out as I've described. Then the Houston veer came out adding a passing option to slow down the defensive attack.

Then rules changed making the pass game more rewarding and desirable. Then the 4 running guys in the backfield bacame the 4 wide receivers and the O-Line can't run block from the 2 yardline.
And here we are.
