because they don't want to get punished for losing to Ohio State.
Bama "we're the king of College Football" running scared.
That's pathetic.

It is the smart thing to do. Had Texas played Cupcake U in their first game they would be in the playoffs. But they lost by a touchdown to Ohio State in the opener instead and didn’t make it.

Why would either team want to play that game given current committee actions?

Bama had the #1 SOS and despite only losing twice in the regular season almost got left out.

If the committee and CFB at large want to see those games played then we need to reward SOS and stop just counting wins and losses like an AP voter.

Texas only dropped to 7th after the OSU loss.
They didn't make it because they lost two other games.
Including 25 point loss and a loss to a horrible Florida team that finished with a losing record.

??? if we instead schedule and beat Rice, we're #1 going into Florida, which drops us to 12 instead of out of the rankings altogether.

anyway, i hope Alabama is just bluffing and using the leverage it has as a high-viewership program to send a message. i understand why big programs would cancel the big OOC games but CFB is so much better when those games are played

Simple, don’t lose to 4-8 Florida

Alabama lost to a worse FSU team. So no, it's not all that simple.

It sucks, but Alabama was scheduling 2 P5 OOC opponents per year with the understanding SoS would remain important.

Instead, the playoffs have proven multiple times record is the only thing that matters and you're better off playing an easy schedule.

People warned this shite would happen, and now it is.

Committee is obsessed with records over strength. Playing a real team out of conference, in this absurd age, is terrible scheduling.

I’m sorry, but if you are the AD or a coach of a big team and not canceling your big out of conference games, you’re an idiot.

The committee gives 0 props for playing and losing big games. If Texas would have known this, they’d be in the playoffs right now.

For the millionth time, Texas could have lost those 2 other games and had they been 10-2 by beating any cupcake (like 90% of P4 does) for their OOC we would have been in the playoffs period. A 10-2 Texas with H2H over OU and Vandy are in.

Much more risk than reward. I agree there is some reward if you win but there is a lot more risk if you lose, much more than necessary.

All those that talk about the Fl and UGA games can you with a straight face honestly say a 10-2 Texas with the exact same outcome on the season just swapping OSU loss with a win agains Wake Forest in the opener is not in the playoffs?

How about win the game and get the perks of beating an Ohio State ?
Good grief, y'all act like playing Ohio State is guaranteeing a loss.
Why isn't Ohio State wanting to cancel the Alabama game ?
Apparently Ohio State isn't afraid of Alabama.
Alabama is like the blowhard bully that turns tail when the other guy says "Ok, let's go".

Makes sense. 'Bama has to play OU now.... likely any season they go 10-3 anyways.

Why would 'Bama , schedule another game they only have a 50 50 chance of winning in any given year?

Why would you play a harder schedule when all the committee cares about is losses. It’s all about loss mitigation as they proven they don’t care about SOS.

Exactly.
Also don't lose by 25 to Georgia.
Had they beat Ohio State they would have had a huge "tie breaker" advantage regarding a playoff argument.
There is a lot to be gained by playing those big OOC games and winning them.

Because Ohio State plays in the Big Ten which is a cakewalk compared to a 9 game SEC schedule. They will be able to recover from early season loss by playing easier teams the rest of way.
