7-10 years ago Mario Cristobal would’ve been considered a terrible hire

He had a 27-47 record as a HC and if anyone considered hiring him at a p5 they would’ve been laughed st. Then he got the job at Oregon, went 35-13 and is now killing it at Miami bringing in top 10 classes, putting #1 qb draft picks into the nfl, winning 10a+ games a year and winning playoff games with a decent shot at a nice playoff run despite shaky qb play.

Goes to show that a coach that did bad before might be a home run hire. I hear a lot of people mention what kiffin did at Tennessee and usc as reasons why lsu will regret hiring him

But look at more recent history and that’s what is more relevant like Mario at Oregon

Pretty crazy to think that in 2-3 years two coaches who would’ve been considered terrible hires 10 years ago might both me top 5 coaches in the country

A lot of his first years were at FIU when they first became an FBS program. And I’m still shocked they fired him

not at all he’s never been a p4 coach and doesn’t fit this criteria in any way possible as he’s only been successful at the g5 level and has never had any serious blemishes as a HC because of that

I’m mostly giving g kudos to Mario for becoming an elite coach and saying that the criticism of lane at usc is mostly
Irrelevant

20 games under .500 is really really bad no matter the level or prestige of a program

I should also add, Miami is not really winning because of cristobal. They are winning because they can now pay players. And players getting paid are going to be attracted to South Florida for obvious reasons

if that was the case why not just keep Diaz and start paying players?

And Miami has been paying players for quite some time…Nevin shapiro

NIL came into law mid 2021. At that time Miami were already trying to move off of Diaz..they wanted him out.

It’s obvious that the Disney Gators should’ve given Napier another 4-6 years to get UF turned around. Mullen’s lackadaisical approach to recruiting really put BN behind the eight ball.

Cristobal and Kiffin were in the Saban ex-coaches rehab program at the same time. Mario tried to kill Kiffin on more than one occasion.

Mario is an elite recruiter and a pretty good CEO type coach, but clock management seems like it will vex him forever.

They didn’t see eye to eye on quite a few things and their personalities don’t mesh well. Mario was assistant HC and OL coach, Kiffin was OC. Clash of styles there as well.

MC was absolutely livid at the 2016 CFP Semifinal in Atlanta. Kiffin had mailed it in, had one foot out the door to FAU. Saban fired Kiffin the next day.

Cristobal is not a man I would want on my bad side.

He's a huge sonofobitch. Plus the Cuban temper.

Mario had a decent run at Oregon but he never really was quite the cultural fit out west. Their fans weren’t so upset to see him go but he had done a good job out there. It’s not easy to get southern players to go to the Northwestern United States. Maybe. Little easier now but he was out there pre NIL. He will still choke a game or two away but he has been able to bolster the Lines of scrimmage, which Miami has been missing out on for years.

Cristobal has an elite eye for talent. Toney was a 3 star. Toney along with Fitzgerald (freshman DB/Safety hybrid with 6 INTs on the season) were part of the 14th ranked class last year. Again, Cristobal is an elite ball knower.

Sour grapes. It’s not just money that makes guys buy in and risk life and limb to win. That LB Toure who almost broke the Aggie RB’s neck to force the incompletion on the goal line is a transfer. No, Cristobal has an elite eye for talent and gets his guys locked in.

A lot of these Bama fans are sour because Cristobal would’ve been the perfect replacement for Saban. Elite recruiter, CEO coach, who stresses toughness especially in the trenches. DeBoer with that soft shite is on borrowed time. We all know this.

Cristobal isn’t all that great of an in-game coach, but he is an elite recruiter. Miami was one of the first schools throwing money around after NIL became legal. In his first 2 classes they got a bunch of kids that they really had no business getting, given their on-field performance. Sort of similar to Venables’ 2023 class when OU went 6-7. I live near a highly ranked kid that signed in Mario’s first class. The kid had much better offers than Miami, but he wouldn’t even bother visiting those schools because he only cared about NIL.
