Chip Lindsey, like Drinkwitz, is a Gus Malzahn disciple.
Drinkwitz has often credited Gus Malzahn as a key influence throughout his coaching life. He worked with Malzahn at Springdale High School in Arkansas in 2004, at Auburn in 2010, and again at Arkansas State in 2012-13.

Lindsey also has a history of working for Malzahn. He was an offensive analyst for Malzahn at Auburn in 2013, when the Tigers went 12-2, beat Mizzou in the SEC Championship Game, and lost to Florida State in the national title game. He was Auburn's offensive coordinator under Malzahn in 2017-18. The Tigers went 10-4 and played in both the SEC title game and the Peach Bowl during that 2017 season.

After his three years at Troy, Lindsey reunited with Malzahn at UCF in 2022. He was again Malzahn's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, though he did not call plays that season. He helped UCF reach the AAC Championship game, and the Knights ranked 16th nationally in total offense and 26th nationally in scoring offense.

He has coached in the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, the old Pac-12.
Lindsey's coaching career began as a longtime high-school coach in Alabama, where he coached at Springville, Sparkman, Deshler, Colbert Heights, Spanish Park, and even under Rush Probst at Hoover in 2007 — the same Hoover that was featured on MTV's Two-A-Days. His ties to Alabama are largely why he left Kansas to coach at Troy.

But Lindsey also has tons of experience coaching major college football, including the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and the old Pac-12.

He coached with Malzahn at Auburn. He was Arizona State's OC in 2016, when the Sun Devils averaged 33.3 points per game. He was North Carolina's OC in 2023-24 under Mack Brown and helped Drake Maye become the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Lindsey was most recently Michigan's offensive coordinator, where he coached with Bryce Underwood, who was the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class.

Lindsey has a history of coaching and developing NFL quarterbacks.
Throughout his coaching career, Lindsey has developed NFL quarterbacks. Maye is obviously the big name, but he also worked with Jarrett Stidham while Auburn's OC in 2017-18 as well as Nick Mullens as Southern Mississippi's OC in 2014-15.

In fact, Maye called former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore to vouch for Lindsey when he interviewed to be Michigan's OC before this last season:

"(Drake said) he felt that he progressed more in his career in that year with Chip than he did at any point in his career," Moore said after hiring Lindsey to be Michigan's offensive coordinator, a year ago this month.

"Really felt like without him he wouldn't have got the chance to go so high in the Draft."

That's probably good news for Matt Zollers, a former 4-star, Top-100 prospect who will be Mizzou's starting quarterback in the bowl game and who Drinkwitz has called the future of the Missouri program throughout his true freshman season.

Ugh.

Michigan had the 107th ranked passing offense. Actually worse than Mizzou’s 103rd.
