A play that will haunt the University of Oklahoma faithful forever

Mateer is flushed out of the pocket to his left on 3rd and 3 and instead of running for 10 yards he throws across his body and drops a dime into the hands of his running back Robinson who has complete separation from Zabien Brown. If the 6'1" 240lb sophomore catches it he won't get brought down by a 190lb CB in the open field. He'll easily shed that tackle and score a TD and the route will be back on. Instead the pass is dropped and the Sooner punter forgets how to place a ball on his foot the very next down. 5 plays later Bama kicks a FG to cut the lead to 7 and 4 plays after that the Oklahoma QB sticks a dart into the facemask of Brown at midfield and the rest is history.

Yes!!! I was at the game and that was the consensus from everyone around me. It was a great throw with a dumb drop. He easily had a wide open run which he can do well. That was the first of many blunders that led to the demise. But it’s not just OU who created their own demise; Alabama took plenty of chances and delivered the lasting blows.

If Mateer had scrambled, Kirk would have been on the telestrator pointing out the open receiver that "could have been a touchdown".

After the first game with all of is quirks, it became obvious to me that only a fool would bet on this game.
It delivered as such.
And then there were the B1G officials.
Missed and ignored calls all over the field.
And then you get a sideline infraction 15 yard penalty that was thirty yards away from the play that swung momentum.
I felt sorry for the Okie kicker who just happened to catch a wind gust on a critical kick.
12 teams are in the bracket and 11 of those teams will end up with some blunders or regrets about what could have been after they lose their last game of the season..

That was a huge play.
On a side note, Mateer's pass was more wounded duck than dime but it did hit the receiver in the hands.
It was odd that both QBs threw 2-3 similar passes last night and every single one of them was dropped like the receivers were having trouble seeing those.

It was tough to determine how much the wind affected the passing down field, but after watching that one field goal kick move a good 12 feet, it crossed my mind.

Yeah, I'm guessing the wind played a big role in some of those drops for both sides last night.

Yep, I told our friends that just cost us the game. They laughed because they don't understand momentum but it's true. You can also say that gutsy 4th & 2 for Bama. Had we stopped them there, I'm pretty sure they would've quit

Mateer isn't a good QB. He doesn't make good decisions throughout most games. I'd agree, that this was the turning point in the game. OU fans will want a change at QB and who can blame them? I like Mateer though, he is tough as nails.

But I think about the first game: uncharacteristic turnovers and missed FG’s. Bama beat UGA in the first game but people forget UGA dropped a TD
I think this is why it’s hard to evaluate coaches: players make the plays. You unfortunately have to have a large sample size before you can blame something on the coaches

Yep, the play will not haunt me. But it was the play that changed the course of the game. Mateer should have taken the 1st down on the run. Move the chains on third down.
Course, if X would have caught the ball he would have scored and OU goes up 24-7 with five minutes left in the half.
Either result would have avoided the second quarter melt most likely. No muffed punt, either a touch of maintain possession eating the clock and driving for a score most likely.
Kudos to 'Bama for not collapsing, but OU shot themselves in the foot on that play. It was the pivitol play of the game in my book.

If he runs, 99 % chance he gets a 1st down.
Throwing on the run across his body on a windy night to a wide open receiver is much less than 99%.
Game situation leading 17 points to 12 yards of offense? run for the 1st down, run some more and eat some clock, get to 24-0 or 20-0.
Drop the ball, forget to kick the punt, pick-6; ball game. The pick-6 was a killer.
Sometime you just have to throw the ball away, you can't scramble out of everything.
Mateer make a lot of really good plays, but he also makes a lot of poor decisions. That side arm shortstop flick into the teeth of the DL-OL mosh pit? Nope.
