This isn't new practice:

most public universities are generally required by state law or university policy to post all job openings publicly, including the head football coach position. This is because they are state entities and their employment practices are subject to public transparency regulations, often related to open meetings and public records laws (like the Freedom of Information Act).

Didn’t they have a pretty decent coach when they restarted the program? Seems like he had them winning a good bit for a few years. What happened to him?

Yeah, Bill Clark. He retired for health reasons. He has some back issue that supposedly became pretty debilitating.

All true, but he was still offered the Auburn job, and turned it down.
