You can add Ole Miss to the title and nothing would change

They’ve been to Atlanta… has Ole Miss?

Two posts in and from a Tigah.
The high water mark of State in football was a fluke trip to Atlanta and a loss to Tennessee in 1998. Then a 38-11 beat down by Texas in the Cotton Bowl to finish 8-5 and unranked.
“For every Schtate fan of any age, not once but whenever she wants it, there is the instant when it’s still not yet eight o’clock on that December evening in 1998, the teams are in position behind the sidelines, the kicker is poised and ready on the field and the kickoff and return units are already in place to break out and Sherrill himself with his short cropped hair and his hat in one hand probably and his playbook in the other looking down the field waiting for the official to sound his whistle and it’s all in the balance, it hasn’t happened yet, it hasn’t even begun yet, it not only hasn’t begun yet but there is still time for it not to begin…”

Yes. An incredible 8-4 season. A shining beacon of excellence.

And lost. State has 1 SEC championship in 1941. Ole Miss has 6.

I took time to make that, and then Chicken, in all his wisdom, pulled the plug on the board.

There’s the time they came to Tuscaloosa with Dak Prescott ranked #1 in the CFP and lost ~42-0.

What a day to be a State fan. So close. But not really.

Yep. We sucked that year. Just like the rest of the SEC West.

7-5 in 1998. One win shy of State’s best year ever.

An inferior program experiencing a high you never will. Pure bliss.

We are great at close but no cigar seasons.
1963-4 points away from winning the SEC
1980-7 points away from winning the SEC
1981-9 points away from winning the SEC
2014-6 points away from winning the West.
So close yet so far.
But today, Ole Miss should roll and win easily. 10-1>5-6 - Right?
Of course we know better and that anything can happen in this game.

Mississippi State went to the SEC championship game once.
How many times has Ole Miss done that?
