Did I read that Penn St owed him a $49 million buyout and he settled for $9 million?
Now I'm sure they removed the offset language for a new job. but still...that's crazy. Why would he agree to that big of a drop?
Definitely doesn't have Grindin' Brian's agent lol.

He had to settle for less if he found another job. Tech just happened to be in the market and Franklin has roots in the DelMarVa area so it made perfect sense for him to take the job. I didn’t look up to see his actual contract with Tech

That’s nuts if right. He must really want to coach. And Penn State got off smelling like an absolute rose.
He is probably going to do very well at VT too.

If he went back to Virginia and took a $40 million loss to do so, then I won't think he is smart enough to be a head coach.

I doubt he's doing volunteer work at Tech. He'll get paid and he knows it.

Yep. Franklin won 70 percent of his games at PSU and was fired.
Paterno has a statue while he won 75 percent and covered for a kiddie diddler.
PSU may be the team of all openings that FAFO.

Sure he is. How many years do you think he will have to work to get $40 million back, though? And, from Va. Tech. Bet they don't pay $10 a year, so he will have to grind for 5 or so years just to pull even.

Virginia Tech was paying their coach $4,750,000 a year.
Penn State was paying Frankilin $8.5 million
Split the difference IF Va. Tech is willing to significantly incrase what they were paying and that comes in at $6 million a year. So, he would have to work 7 years just to break even after walking away from $40 million, and that doesn't not even take into account the extras he could have if her just invested the $40 million and made 8% interest on it.

I’m sure every dollar of pay at VTech offset his buyout.
His Penn State buyout was through 2031, so it works out to $6M/yr.
So if he’s making just $6M/yr, he’s coming out $9M ahead (not counting the time value of money).

Franklin's buyout was payable over time, and subject to mitigation. Taking a $9 million lump sum makes sense, in light of the fact that he's lined up what is likely to be a well paying job that would knock his buyout down by 2/3 even if he took it over time.

PSU owed Franklin $8 million a year for 7 years left on his contract
if they settled for $9 million that means VPI is paying him somewhere in the neighborhood of $7 million a year for 7 years which would be a good deal for both parties (PSU is only responsible for a little over $1.3 million a year, and Franklin will make $8.3 million combined annually

I wonder if that is strictly coaching jobs or if it considers television?
He could probably take the extra $40m lump sum and make a million or more annually just calling football games for a few months, with much less stress.

His new salary would offset his buyout. So I’m sure VT is paying him more than $49 million so it’s probably a win for Franklin.

Yes, I used to have to go there once a year because of my job and it does seem pretty nice. We worked with the VTTI folks who are connected with the university and they were some pretty cool folks. I think Franklin will do okay there

Maybe. but he would, in essence still be working for free, would he not? he could get $40 million for not working or $40 million for working. It makes no difference who is paying you, does it?

Maybe it's just me. But it never makes sense to give up $40 million.
Even if it is paid out over the next 7 years, as the poster above said.
