Something big is happening in the Magnolia State. Oklahoma politicians are openly wanting to copy the education change Mississippi has put in place.

I guess they didn't teach criteria being an important factor in these things in Mississippi.
So like...based on what?

It’s pretty remarkable what’s taken place in Mississippi. That said, wasn’t one of the major changes they made simply holding back kids in like the 3rd or 4th grade?

In a way. Basically how it was phrased by an Oklahoma politician at a conference
Mississippi went back to simply, grades 1-3 you learn to read. After that you read to learn for the rest of your life. You cannot go to grade 4 without the ability to read and that is being enforced and focus/help given to kids to do just that.
There is no magic cheat code, just enforcing logic.

The fact that this is something that needed to be addressed in the first place is fricked up.

I think they also just changed the metrics they were looking at. We went from like bottom 4 to top 20 seemingly overnight. Traditionally you would expect trending in data.

Oklahoma’s superintendent, who has attracted national attention as he sought to install religion and rightwing viewpoints in Oklahoma schools, will resign to run a conservative education non-profit.
Ryan Walters, who has led public schools in Oklahoma since 2022, has put Donald Trump-endorsed Bibles into classrooms and required teaching 2020 election conspiracy theories
I don’t understand why this didn’t work.

So great. Mississippi rarely gets any positive national press but I’ve been searching the internet for the past 15 minutes on this and it looks like it’s making some pretty impress headlines. Just awesome

I would imagine this is a major issue in the majority of US states, specifically the more rural states.

Some teachers comments were debunking this recently and pointed out some things contributing to the huge jump, they are not counting alternate testing. So the state is playing the numbers—while it looks good, it is kinda misleading. So basically kids that don’t pass tests or can’t get out of 3rd grade, are given alternate testing —and these national rankings don’t count the alternate testing (which are reserved primarily for kids with learning disabilities) so the state is only acknowledging the numbers of kids that pass, not the ones that fail. The ones that fail are sent to alternate testing or consider to have a learning disability.

Alabama (50)
Thank God for Alabama, right Arkansas and Florida, Louisiana and OK!
Poor Knox Kiffin, getting drug to a Ghetto when it comes to education.

This entire ranking is bogus because ghetto school districts lie about their education "accomplishments"
Sorry Mississippi, nobody is fooled here.

Ah, there is always that one person. At least list your sources, are the teachers on public record stating this?

Any reasonable or decisive alternative solution would have been called racist. This was the humane solution.

Mississippi just said we aren't going to let you move up to the 5th grade unless you can read proficiently. They placed a huge focus on reading and comprehension.
Seriously. That's it. Now 6th graders in Mississippi are better at reading than 90% of Baltimore City Public High Schoolers.
