Elko Ability On Full Display If You Paid Attention

Elko was asked in his press conference about the fake punt.
He essentially said that “We noticed teams were stacking up against the block and being undisciplined or vulnerable against the fake”.
Aggies had been blocked twice this season. So this staff went back at that tape and not only fixed the holes to stop the blocked punt from happening. But also schemed to take advantage of teams that were overloading to make it happen.
Brooks was a great high school running back and they intentionally designed a scheme to place a RB that no one would suspect as a RB for a fake.
My point is the coaching staff and general awareness to prepare for that. And then the balls to actually do it. But he did it because they ACTUALLY prepared for that exact scenario to happen.
For a team to get down overload one side to try to block and expose the other side.
So they pulled the trigger knowing they had a RB carrying the ball.
That was 3D chess going on. If you were watching and listening to what Elko actually said.

That was 2D chess.
3D chess will occur when the opposing team fakes that vulnerable look.
Having a skill player in position to receive the snap was a dead giveaway for anyone paying attention.

He’s one of the best I’ve ever seen at making meaningful adjustments. Surgical-like.

Dalton Brooks is not a skill player. He is a safety and he always lines up there. He played RB in high school so he might have looked like a skill player but he's a defensive back.

An opposing coach would have to pay a lot of attention to recall that he was a high school running back, and to then prepare for exactly that play.
What I do not remember is whether that big lead blocker also always lines up in the backfield for a punt.

Up 21-7 playing against an offense that was struggling when you have a killer D is what made this successful. It was well designed and executed and showed great pregame prep.

I don’t know if he normally lines up in the backfield on punt or not, but I think it would be unusual to have a defensive tackle in that position. Having a linebacker/safety or even a cornerback there probably makes more sense.
My guess is that Regis was put there specifically for this play.

I dont know about regis specifically but yes its normally a bigger guy there, not a DB. You want a large dude in that position right in front of your punter. It all actually worked so well the 12th man didnt have anyone to block.

I would really expect a linebacker or a safety, because he is also your last chance tackler, and I would think he wants someone who has both the speed and the umpphh for that job.
