Teams in the late ‘80’s were impacted severely by the sanctions from the fallout of the 1984 season. He had some pretty good teams and he coached Kerwin Bell and Emmitt Smith, amongst many others. Do most old time fans have a disliking of Hall or is he considered a decent coach? He’s in his 80’s now but I remember some really good teams that he coached.

I think most UF fans consider him a very good coach. But 84...was to old to coach 10 years ago.

Yeah I understand that. I just remember that name from a time I started watching CFB and emmitt smith was my favorite player back in the day.

He has always been considered a good coach and rightly so.

Sooners had Galen Hall for a while.

In 1966, Hall joined the staff as a receivers coach under head coach Jim Mackenzie at Oklahoma. Hall was an assistant with the program for the next 17 years under three head coaches – Mackenzie, Chuck Fairbanks, and Barry Switzer. Switzer had been the Sooners' offensive coordinator before taking the head job for the 1973 season, and he promoted Hall to fill his old position.

Hall remained Oklahoma's offensive coordinator for a decade, during which time they boasted one of the most prolific offenses in college football. Using a run-heavy wishbone offense, the Sooners won two straight national championships (1974 and 1975), eight straight Big 8 championships, and produced Heisman Trophy-winning]] running back Billy Sims under Hall and Switzer.

I remember Galen Hall quite well. I thought he was an excellent coach. I don't recall the particulars of his exit, but I was very surprised.

Pell did the cheating and Hall got the penalties. Hall did get canned for paying assistants out of his pocket.

Also was accused of paying for a players legal expenses. These are all NCAA violations. Yall were banned from TV for a year in 1990 for it unless he was fired. People arent fired for no reason, especially when you are 40-18

First off, this is a violation? Secondly, why was he doing it, was UF just really cheap back then?

I played for Pell and Hall. The NCAA had a hard on for Pell since Clemson. They destroyed an incredible coach that truly cared about people. UF was doing what EVERY team was doing back then. Those same rules today are laughable. Pell is the primary reason UF exploded in football. But the university erased those years and left him no legacy. Then Hall took the fall right after. Those Gators teams were some of the most talented but you never got to see them as they were banned from TV.

My old man was undergrad during Pell/Hall and always told me we’d have 5 titles (84/85) if the NCAA didn’t make a point of punishing us for nothing just cause our program was finally getting good.

Galen Hall won Florida's first SEC title in 1984 and had the best record in 1985 (beat the Vols H2H).

UF was robbed after the SEC presidents voted to overturn a previous decision by the SEC's executive committee that allowed Florida to keep the title. I always heard this spearheaded by UGA and UT.

AU, Bama and Miss St supported UF by the way.

UF and Miami were taking off in the early 80s.

Miami won it all in '83 with their only loss to UF.

UF was the best SEC team in '84 and '85.
Only loss was to Miami in '84
Only loss to UGA in '85

When UF was hit with probation, that's when FSU took off.

These infractions even voided our 1990 SEC title also, even though those UF players had nothing to do with anything.
