Seriously, how are 2 teams that are knocking on the door of a top 10 ranking only favored by less than a touchdown over Duke & MS State??

Illinois-3.5 @ Duke

Arizona State -6.5 & MS State

Is it media bias towards the B1G & former Pac 12?

There is just a tendency to let rankings streaks go until they are unmasked.

Both teams had great seasons last year. Arizona State probably should have beat Texas in the playoffs.

I would argue the SEC has just as many mid-tier teams that are over ranked pre-season.

My Aggies are usually the culprit.

Well the media loves fat Bert. LOL- yeah that’s probably not it. The media probably ranks them highly because of that bowl win vs USCe last year. As far as Arizona State, they are still riding high off of Cam Skatteboo but he’s gone to the league. So maybe the media is still impressed with their OT loss to Texas last year? Who knows. Early season nonsense

ESPN and Fox analysts had Illinois propped up during the preseason to make the playoffs. That is why they are flying up the rankings. Arizona St? Not sure, I didn't hear anyone really talk about them this offseason, but Illinois? If you go by how they were talked up in the offseason, I'm surprised they're not already in the top five.

Maybe the ranking isn't the problem, and you've just found "value" in the betting odds.

Skattebo and that center that ASU had last year were hell to deal with. They are both gone this year.

State's problem last year was that their defense was atrocious. They held Leavitt to 10-20 for 66 yards passing. Granted, they didn't have to pass, but Leavitt struggled against State's secondary.

ASU will not be able to run at will on State this year. They may still run for 200 yards, but that's half of what they did last year to win 30-23 at home.

Mississippi State is going to beat Arizona State.

How does SEC have so many top teams after whooping by Big 10 last season? Heck their 9th place team whipped 2 of our better teams. ND whipped our Champion and we are crying about rankings.

It's week 2, none of the rankings will make much sense.

All of this plus AZ St. looked worse at home against Northern Arizona University, and FCS school, than we did on the road at Southern Miss who might not be world beaters, but at least they're in the same division and they hate us so they always play us hard.

I do feel our game @ASU last year wasn't as close as the score indicates because of garbage time, but while they return a ton they lost their two best players while we have an almost entirely new squad that seems better at almost every spot with new blood.

I think Illinois is grossly overhyped but I got them at 2.5 this weekend and think it’s good value

I like our chances at home against AZ State. We had a bad team last year and still only lost by a touchdown on the road. You have no idea how much Skatteboo carried their offense. I predict a close one and possibly low scoring.

I’m less optimistic about State’s chances against ASU. I have a hard time saying State is definitely improved enough to win a game against a good team after they played less than a half of good football against a Sun Belt program that is probably middle of the pack at best in that league.

I think it’s short selling ASU to act as if Skattebo was their whole team. Leavitt went on to have a very good year at QB, both running and passing, and Tyson is a projected first round pick at WR. They don’t have the one elite RB anymore but they’ve still got a stable of good backs and are a good team at the LOS.

I will be REALLY impressed if State wins this game. My expectation is a close-ish loss. I don’t think State is ready to win a game like this yet. Not when they’ve barely played P5 teams within single digits over the last two years. The next step in the progression is to go from getting blown out to losing competitive games, Learning how to be good in “winning time” is a skill and I’m gonna have to see it to believe it with State.
