Has any coach ever gone their first five years without an SEC Championship, but then won one in year 6,7,8+?

I mean coaching at the same team.

I'm sure it happened in the old days when coaches stuck around for 20 years, but since, say, 1990?

Also, how long has Brian Kelly been at LSU now?

He can’t even win a NY6 bowl. For most of his 20+ year career, they gave out 6 of those per season. Close to 120 chances and he has exactly ZERO.

The chance of him being 1 of 1, when he couldn’t even be 1 of 6 for 21 straight years, is virtually nil (barring some fluke LSU NIL boost to buy a $50mm team)

Yes Johnny Majors didn’t win one till 1985 (year 9). Then he won two more

Also Charles Mclendon didn’t win the SEC till 1970 (year 8)

Fulmer didn’t win till year 5

Jimbo... 6yrs w/aggies; 0 SEC titles

Lane Kiffin... going into 5th year; 0 SEC titles

Josh Heupel... going into 5th year; 0 SEC titles

Dan Mullen... 9yrs w/moo state; 0 SEC titles

Will Muschamp... 5yrs w/South Carolina; 0 SEC

I got tired of listing SEVERAL others than never won an SEC title.

Fulmer was the first one I thought of

It came in his fifth full season (1997), but his 6th as head coach overall (he coached the first 3 games and bowl game of 1992)

I think Dodd at GT and Shug Jordan both took 6 seasons, as well.

But, like all HCs in the pre-SEC championship game era, it isn't apples to apples to those post-SEC CG era. They used to share the title, so a bit easier path to "win" one. We saw in both the East and the West over the SEC CG era that often times the best two teams are in the same division. So, lots of teams didn't get the post-season shot at the title game.

Lots of coaches haven't won the SEC. Maybe you need to re-read the OP?

Exactly.

Eventually every LSU fan will come to terms with what Bama fans knew the day you hired this guy. He is a coach that the following teams would have hired and been happy with:
Aggie, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Miss St, and USCe.

Guess how many championships those 5 teams that you listed have in the last 25 years? I’ll give you a hint, it’s the same number of NY6 bowl wins your coach has in his 21 years of coaching FBS.

Why??? It's a shot at BK because he hasn't won an SEC Championship yet, yet overlooking SEVERAL that never have.

Did you see the teams of the ones you mentioned? You absolutely proved everyone’s point…BK is on par with coaches at teams that haven’t won a championship since before 2000. Not a single person on your list was from Bama, LSU, UGA, FL, and if they were, they would have been fired from those schools. Exactly what’s going to happen to BK once LSU can afford it (or the ‘ole “retired with a buyout” routine).

I would hope I did. And i guess you might as well put DeBust on that list.

Then don’t say, we have expectations at LSU, or we are going to the playoffs. if he can be at LSU for 8 years, and never make the playoffs, don’t preach that’s your standard.

Way to deflect. Guess you agree that you put BK on a list of non-champions where he will likely forever belong.

If DeBoer goes even 4 years without winning the SEC or making the playoffs, he will absolutely be torn to pieces…let alone 5,6 or 9 years. You definitely won’t find a respectable Bama fan putting together a list like yours to try to defend him. Bama and LSU have completely different levels of performance and expectations.

This is why I'm now a Bama fan.

Looking forward to many future natties.

Did your dumbass program give their last HC a National Championship blank date plaque??? You should really just shut your mouth and not preach about a HC not winning an SEC Championship.

Considering you don’t have to win the SEC to win the NC who really cares ? (I kinda do )

This is the salient answer. Since the 90's, nobody but Tuberville.

So best case scenario for LSU is Brian Kelly can accomplish what Tommy did at Auburn.

Yikes.

I worry that you may be having difficulty though, as you transition, determining who your rivals are. If you need assistance send me a DM.
