Why are some schools currently "hanging back" on Football recruiting?

The current top 4 ranked teams all already almost have full classes and then you have these other big name programs that are half full or less just chilling at this juncture, with an expected late push.

Explain the logic of "waiting in the wings" to me like I'm 12.

Picking and choosing, waiting for senior year film. Loading the McDonald's bags.

Because some of the top tier schools are trying to recruit top tier talent and those players almost always wait until the last minute to commit to a given school.

For example, OU once you commit expect you to shut down your recruitment. But they know some recruits use the process to get free visits and goodies. So they do what is called silent commits. They secretly commit but no one announces it. This allows them to take other visits without making it appear like cheating girlfriend.

Thats one example but there are some schools who encourage recruit to look elsewhere assuming they’ll be better players/teammates if they stick to original.

Many schools have devalued high school recruiting in favor of the portal. Mizzou for example is not willing to pay guys like Nwaneri to come a year, not be good enough to start and then transfer, waste of money.

Or moreso, splitting efforts 50/50.

The portal has probably been as important as HS recruiting the last few years, and any FR you bring in this year could be gone the next.

Summer camps to evaluate people, and sometimes the recruits you want just don't commit until later in the year.

Some schools like Texas and Georgia are relying on brand and development to secure their classes early so they can use the season to start recruiting 2027 and beyond.

Others like Auburn, FSU, etc are going to wait until December and start throwing out gaudy NIL numbers (assuming their boosters are willing to foot the bill and haven’t quit on hot seat coaching staffs) to cherry pick from others classes.

Then you hve the Miamis and USCs who are doing the same as Auburn and FSU, they’re just doing it in the Summer to try to grab headlines and attention while the water is relatively calm in hopes of attracting other recruits on momentum and a belief that they can ride that wave into the season.

If you are paying attention to the recruits themselves, you may have noticed that many of the players are just now having their commitment day. It's up to the players to commit when they want. June is the old January when it comes to committing, with the early signing period now allowing recruits to start and stop their official visits. Some schools want to work them out in camps before offering, and again, that puts them in the June and summer cycle.

These players, for the most part, and schools as well, want to have most of the heavy lifting done once the high school season starts. Distractions, at that point, seem to be more than a lot of players want to deal with. I would say that once the summer is over, most teams will have their nucleus.

I would also say that teams like BAMA seem to top off these days at around 20 recruits. The transfer portal numbers and having a plan that allows schools to keep it's high school recruits longer also seem to be the new trend. I believe that our GM is so important to getting all this done at a championship level.

Some of the commits that UGA has and I assume other as well, are not taking up scholarships. You can pay players now and some can be taken care of as walkons (paid enough to cover their education) without actually being a scholarship player. The number you go by now is the total number you're allowed to have on your roster (105). Technically, only 85 of these are "scholarship" athletes. But I'd say with the bigger programs, almost all of them will make enough to pay for their education.

There is no commitment right now that's a hard commitment. Every player out there could get an offer they can't refuse. And I wouldn't blame them for backing out. Just the way it is.

To be fair, most of the recruits will sign with the team they committed to. It's not really close.

Nobody is "hanging back". Their agents are telling them to hold off on commitments for as long as they can to negotiate the best deal they can get.

The people that have "almost complete classes" are paying massive NIL deals for kids to commit right away and shut down their recruitment. If they re-open their recruitment, the deal is null and void.

True, but if someone really wants a guy you have and is willing to pay for him, you either will have to raise it to what he's comfortable with or let it go.

I agree that most on your roster will not be put in this situation, but some will. Especially the guys graded highly.

Compare that with last year. The hard cap is going to punish the hell out of a football team for going hard after an elite player. Many mouths to feed in the locker room make balancing the books an art form. Even then, because it can no longer be stupid money, the loyalty these players may have about certain teams they grew up loving becomes a lot easier to follow through. 2 major factors put a player in the portal. Money and playing time. The money trail just changed its stripes.

We will all soon get a much better feel for how the new model will work.

Well, I like the changes. Posted on here it was good for college football and got voted down like crazy. I guess many were under the crazy assumption that it was going to go back to scholarship only.

$ means more than relationships now. Financial negotiations go down to the last minute all the time.
