The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has arguably been the top conference in college football since the mid-2000s.

However, its dominance may be waning, as a Big Ten team has won the last two national championships; the Michigan Wolverines claimed victory in 2023, followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2024. In both instances, no SEC team made it to the national championship game This year, Finebaum is questioning whether there is an elite team in the SEC.

It’s June. Paul is just trying to drum up phone calls for his show.

Ohio st spent a bazillion dollars buying players and still lost 2 games and couldn't beat a 5 loss MIchigan team, for the 18th time in a row. They were the most overrated NC team in the history of the sport and don't even deserve to be in the conversation.

Michigan, on the other hand, was a great team and I'll give the Little 10 that one. But one good team compared to a decade + of SEC dominance and all the sudden they are the elite conference? That's laughable...

As far as football is concerned, he's right.

The odds are much greater that an SEC team will win a natty than the BIG 10.
In terms of schools, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, OU, Texas, Florida and Georgia have all won national titles since 2000. They're all capable. That's 8 schools. The BIG has four schools if you count USC.

Not according to Paul.

It is a new era—time to accept that.

The transfer portal and NIL leveled the playing field immensely. I mean the SEC is still the best overall conference top to bottom but the days of the SEC winning the natty, usually by blowout, 9-10 years in a row, those days are long gone.

Paul is often wrong about a lot of things. I've known him since he was a little skinny wimp at White Station High School in Memphis. Bottom line is the SEC still has more teams capable of winning a natty.

Beat 2 of the 3 SEC teams in the playoffs, and then put a whoopin on the team that the little puppies lost to in SEC country.

Not hardly. But you should be thankful that you got a Notre Dame team that had the luxury of playing us without our starting QB and 3 injured OLinemen. Otherwise, they could have very well have got UGA in the natty game. And uh...well, we all know how that would have gone. Let me just remind you...

"There's the snap. The kick is up...aaaaaaaaaand, he hooked it! Wide left! UGA wins!"

Ahhhh....it never gets old.

What happened to your starting QB?
Oh yeah , he found out he wasnt superman when he tried to throw that pass at end of first half in SEC championship
And your Backup still had nightmares of Andrew Makuba while playing ND
When you beat Texas, you lose!

It’ll be elite now that Texas is there.

Ohio St was only able to play for a national championship because the standards for winning them was lowered substantially.

Furthermore, SoS no longer matters either.

As such, it was proven within a single year that "elite status" no longer means anything. You can just be substandard with a mediocre schedule, get hot/lucky with the opponent selection and profit.

It is unlikely you will ever see an elite team in college football again unless the NIL/Portal changes.

Texas damn sure isn't there.
