Would it rank above all IB that werent tied to a national championship run? Higher than that? Lower? Not even on radar? #1?

It would be a once in a lifetime game, equivalent to winning $1000 on a $5 scratcher.

I don't think basketball scratches the surface of football relevance in the Heart of Dixie and as between these two old rivals.

It would be bigger than any Iron Bowl played in history so far.
It’s the final game vs your rival.
They get a title and you don’t.
And neither of you has ever won one.
It would be the most painful loss in all of sports history for either team.
Anyone who tells you different is lying to themselves.

For the programs? Without a doubt it'd be the biggest game and potentially loss.
For the fans? Not even close.

Like the majority of people who are fans of either team, I don't watch basketball.
If you are someone who does, then it's probably going to mean a lot more to you. But for everyone else, it's not really going to mean anything. I of course hope Alabama wins for obvious reasons, but that's about the extent of it.
Probably have a bigger impact on younger generations and how much they care about the game in the future.

If the two ever meet in the CFP Championship Game that game would be much bigger.

The closest the Iron Bowl to being a "de facto" national title was in 2013 which ended with the Kick Six; if Auburn had beaten Florida State one could view that one in the same vein.
Simply put, no other Iron Bowl was a national title impactor for BOTH teams. The next closest was probably 1971, when it was #3 Alabama vs #5 Auburn. It's possible the winner, regardless which one, was going to play for the title... but Nebraska beat Alabama in the bowl game so that one is also moot.

I dunno about that.
Maybe after the fact for the losers it would get played off like that.
But to beat your arch rivals to win a national title while simultaneously denying them one... plus (barring an SEC Tournament rematch) be the rubber game of the series this year. The nearly 48 hours beforehand and the winner gloating afterward would be unbearable.

Just because auburn has given up on football doesn't automatically make a basketball game bigger.

you say that at someone who, presumably, likes and follows college basketball and roots for your team in all sports. I think you are majorly overstating how much the people of alabama care about basketball. there are hundreds of thousands of bama and AU fans out there that would prefer to go winless in basketball in exchange for winning one iron bowl.

No one is reading the OP’s question.
He is excluding a football game where the two teams were playing for a championship.
You are telling me that neither fanbase would trade an Iron Bowl win (last year) for a national championship in basketball?????

I'd watch us play Auburn in dominos if it were for a natty.

3 more downvotes to meet our National championship quota

quote:like 2011 alabama had to beat auburn to stay in national title contention so that qualifies as "an Iron bowl with national title implications" not Alabama vs auburn for the title (cause obviously nothing would beat that)
