Earlier, it was said that Ohio St paid $20M in NIL to its football players this year.
Now, reports delving into the Buckeye's spending reveals that OSU actually operated at an incredible amount of over $38 million deficit, much more than the $20 million earlier reported.
OSU's athletic director, Ross Bjork, said in response to the new revelations.......
"While last year’s budget impact is not ideal and there were unique circumstances at play, we have a robust expense and revenue plan that has been implemented and have made great progress in this ever-changing landscape of college athletics. We will make sure we operate with a balanced budget moving forward."
One important note in this report...........
Bjork's prioritizing the football program and the successful attempt at winning a national championship and the spoils that come with will still come at a serious cost school-wide. He told the Columbus Dispatch in August that several other sports will have to operate closer to a club model instead of participating as full NCAA recognized Division I programs.
The future of collegiate sports is unfolding before our eyes in that last statement. Stick a fork in it. It's done. I'm done with it, too.

There was a reddit thread breaking down the financials and they're actually projected for a big surplus next year. If I'm remembering correctly most of this had to do with the 6 home game schedule + a large amount of capital expenditures in OSU's FY24.
That said, the note at the end is important. I believe that sports in general & certainly CFB are reaching a bubble. Look at how broke the Euro soccer leagues are. Series A & LA Liga are turning into poverty leagues and there just isn't enough to keep up with the EPL.

Just because Georgia is washed up does not mean You should give up on them.
38 million is nothing to Ohio State as long as football is taken care of.

Athletic department accounting is very strange. CapEx should be capitalized and depreciated over long periods. I can't see how it would swing a P&L that much if you are using accrual accounting.

You wish UGA was washed up 'cuz you can't beat us.
When it comes to 'money in the bank', UGA has more than Ohio State, I'd bet. We don't operate at a deficit, Buckaroo.

Texas made money this year and Ohio State lost?

We have one of the largest athletic budgets in the country and our football program is worth nearly $2 billion. This year’s ticket and merchandise sales should easily make up for that deficit.

We have a wealthier line of NIL donors and our university endowment is almost $7 billion more than UGA’s endowment. And to top it off, your school has a fricking abysmal graduation rate. So there’s that.

Not to mention the buyout for the shitty basketball coach Holtmann was 9 million. I thought this was an SEC board

Exactly. The title will pay for itself. Anything left owed will be taken care of by our wealthy donors. This isn't the AH-HA the OP was hoping for.

OP is salty that his team got ran out of the stadium by a Notre Dame squad that had half of their starters out
