AUBURN, Alabama–Already on the Auburn staff has the special teams coordinator, Tanner Burns will add some extra duties this season as a defensive assistant that will help in the secondary along with Wesley McGriff and T.J. Rushing. Burns has a history of coaching defense going back to his time as an assistant at Liberty with coach Hugh Freeze. This won't impact Auburn's desire to hire another on-field assistant for the defense however with Freeze still looking to bring in someone to coach the edge/outside linebacker positions for the Tigers.

Burns has spent the last two years coaching the special teams for the Tigers after coming over from Liberty.

Burns made the most of his coaching debut in 2019, helping the Flames during their first full season at the FBS level to a bowl game win as Liberty's Special Teams Coordinator.

Interesting. That seems like a promotion of sorts.

Surprised because special teams have fallen off the ledge the past 2 years

Probably the biggest thing I've disagreed with Freeze on. Everyone knows I'm not a Charles Kelly fan and even I can say this is a big downgrade. No idea how he was terrible as a special teams coach and somehow that means he gets to add DB coaching to his plate with special teams. To be completely honest this guy should have been fired and special teams deserves a real coach.

We were paper thin as a roster, ST was evidence of this

Obviously the FG kicking was abysmal this season but I don’t really put that on Burns at all. On punt returns we have up only 3.1 yards per return. J. Cobb was 4th in kick return average. Punt returns were something to be desired but we did block a punt for a TD. Was it really that bad or does the lack of efficient FG kicking make everything else seem worse?

Plus he is in an off field position so I give him the benefit of the doubt. He should be on the field.

But as far as him being called up to coach a defensive position. WTF.

We were a penalty waiting to happen on ST. We couldn't make a FG and our punting sucked. That's coaching and not lack of talent.

So a bad ST will now have their coach spread thin?

The architect of our not good ST. Gets a promotion to Defense?

Hugh keeps giving me reasons not to believe.

This was my biggest issue, outside of missing all the FGs. It seemed like every time we had a decent return, it was called back by a hold, block in the back or some other spot foul that took off lots of yardage. Defending kicks it also seemed like we would give up extra yardage due to a facemask or something all the time.

Special Teams were as bad as I can remember this past season.

As a former college kicker, I’m gonna respectfully disagree with you on this one.

Kicking is much more mental than physical. Like golf, there are times where the kicking mechanics can get slightly off, causing your kicks to be less predictable. These glitches can be subtle and hard to diagnose. When this happens, it’s easy to press, which makes things worse. Couple pressing with the pressure of kicking in the SEC, and your confidence goes bye-bye. And then it’s like quicksand, the more you struggle, the worse it gets.

The best thing Freeze did was change the the walk-on for the last couple of games. Gives them time to work through it. I predict that, by spring, they’ll be back in top form.

I blame the overall play of the ST on Burns. But place kicking and punting are on the individual players unless it’s a snap or snap/hold issue.

Punting we were very solid until he ran the fake on his own and got stuffed and essentially help cost us the game. After that he struggled to strike the ball good. I think we allowed negative return yards on punt return on the season until the bama game and gave up a big return.

Kickoff return was the one that seemed to hurt the most with penalties. But I understand the staff being aggressive on kickoff return to try to get the offense going. We committed to many penalties and that’s a lot on coaching. Punt return we seem to have been bad forever. Just fricking catch the ball. Punters have become so good with hang time and not out kicking their coverage. So just make the best decisions possible as a punt return to catch or not catch when near the endzone and simply just catch the damn ball.

While this is true, ST was an obvious liability due to poor discipline and missed assignments on punts and kickoffs.
FG team gets a pass due to the McPherson illness and the fact our freshman was obviously not mentally prepared to take the stage. Nobody could have seen that shitshow coming.
That said, it is coaching, not talent on punt/KO teams.

AU needs a better ST coach.

Auburn kinda put mcgough in some bad situations. It's obvious he has a strong leg but after missing some of the long tries I think it started messing with his head. Hopefully he recovers and can get back on track.
