Byrne mentioned an antitrust settlement that will allow schools to share revenues with athletes in the near future, noting the “$25 million line-item” that is upcoming for UA. In the meantime, he told The Next Round that he’s looking to make the athletics department more efficient, searching for opportunities to reduce head count among other cost reductions.

There has been alot of NIL doom and gloom lately. Is this about to change?

Bama AD revenues are at or neat the top.

It won't hurt us, but there will be a cap, so It won't help us much more than any other top program.

We'll still be where we are now. Comfortably ahead of most people. Comfortably behind the big hitters. Probably in the bottom half of the top 10 but we should still be expecting to compete for NC's with good coaching.

Alabama reported spending just under $5.9 million on athlete meals across the department for FY 2023. That’s up from $775,044 in FY 2021.

Holy crap at this, though.

We're going to have to cut a lot of shite to get to the $25 mil. I don't envy this part of Byrne's job. He's going to have to fire a lot of people.

Inflation is a major concern too, hence I keep saying we need to buy silver and not let the money just sit around.

I'm not donating to support players that may or may not stay. I'm sorry... But I won't do it. I'm ok with that. Get some rules in place around NIL and transfer portal and I'm in. Until then, nope.

$25 million?

Why not $50 million...$100 million?

There's just no way you can go forward without contracts and salary caps and strict guardrails on the transfer portal.

Remember when everyone was crying about the poor players not being able to get paid for autographs? How quaint.

Alot of this would go away if nfl would sign kids out of hs. Buy their rights if you willl.

Never gonna happen. It’s a helluva lot easier and cheaper for them to just allow the colleges to provide their feeder system than to implement one themselves. They’ve got thing thing figured out and it ain’t changing anytime soon.

There might be a cap on what university sponsored collectives can do, but a cap on what any player can make on their own is directly in violation of what the courts have ordered. Their ability to make whatever they can get cannot be impeded.

That’s whatever it will be. The point of the colleges paying them is to get contracts that recreate the freedom of movement restrictions that existed previously for players so this insanity stops and people can practically manage building a roster.

And the free school is free as in everything. Not even the usual 500 dollars of books are on your own dime.

There’s a reason many college facilities are better than pro sports. That narrative is changing with NIL. I hope we got everything football related up to date before this went down. I hate it for the basketball fans. No new arena in sight. The limited amount of money has to go to football. The players can’t complain about facilities and room/board in the future.

No. That's not how any of this works. Collectives can pay whatever the frick they want under the fake NIL guise.

Universities will operate with a salaray cap for the football players they employ.

25 million is alot of money for a salary cap. Will this just drive up further what these kids are getting? Or will it displace some of the NIL.

Bama's revenue is always top two or three. Our fan base is not two or three in money to piss away.

I really wish UA would have extended such a bad deal to me when I was in undergrad.

Also the free Tutorial help that accelerates their graduation process. Players are graduating in 3 and 3 1/2 years regularly.

None of that was free. They had to earn that and if they weren't good enough they got processed
