Has any team other than Alabama ever won 3 NC's in a row twice? I know Alabama did it in '64, '65, and '66 and then again in '77, '78, and '79.
This thread is not about Alabama, so try not to concentrate on that aspect of it.

Technically the only 3peat is Minnesota with various selectors in 1934 and 1935 then winning the first AP title in 1936.
Close 3peats whether at the beginning or the end:
ARMY: AP champs in 1944 and 1945. Went into final regular season game of 1946 as the #1 team, won the game, AP voted Notre Dame.
OKLAHOMA: undefeated in 1954. AP voted Ohio State and UPI voted UCLA. Sooners would win back-to-back undefeated AP/UPI titles in 1955 and 1956.
ALABAMA: AP/UPI champs in 1964, AP champs in 1965, undefeated in 1966 but never held the top ranking. Notre Dame wins both polls despite purposely ending their final game in a tie to secure the top spot.
OKLAHOMA: unbeaten in 1973 while on probation finishing #2 in UPI/#3 in AP; 1974 AP champs and 1975 AP/UPI champs.
ALABAMA: AP/UPI #2 in 1977, AP champs in 1978, AP/UPI champs in 1979.
NEBRASKA: lost Orange Bowl game (1993 BC NCG) to FSU, 1994 and 1995 AP/Coaches national champs.
USC: 2003 AP champs (sorry LSU fans), 2004 AP champs (BCS vacated), loss in 2005 BCSNCG.

1941 was equal to 3 natties.
Many colleges did not field a team in 1943.

How about 1939? Asking for a friend.

We're post-week 0 and less than 24 hours from week 1 kicking off. Bump this thread next April or may and we can bring you back down to earth during the off season when these things should be brought up.

Alabama shares the 1934 NC with Minnesota so, in a way, Alabama can also claim Minnesota's 3 Peat as their's too. Technically, that is.

We didn't either.
There's a debate that we SHOULD have won it in 1966, but you could then make the argument that we SHOULDN'T have in 1964.
As far as 1977 is concerned, one could argue that the SEC's agreement for the champion to play in the Sugar Bowl (where we played #9 Ohio State) is what really hurt us because Notre Dame was able to travel anywhere and got the opportunity to play #1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl. If Notre Dame had only JUST beaten Texas, Alabama is probably national champions; however, they obliterated them in their own backyard so ND leapfrogged Alabama to be champs.
There's about 4 teams that could have been national champs at the end of the 1977 season. It would been a good year for a playoff, as 8 teams (7 eligible for the post-season) had either 0 or 1 loss heading into the bowl games.
We will never have a 1977-esque postseason again (where #1, #2, and #4 all lost and #3 goes up to #2 and #5 jumps to #1).
Side note:
Reading up on the 1965 Alabama season back in the day is one of the reasons that Vince Dooley is considered one of my favorite rival coaches. They could have kicked the PAT for a tie in that opener, but Dooley had balls, went for 2, and Georgia upset Alabama to open the season.

nothing to be sorry about, 2003 AP was part of the BCS, they didn't like they darling USC was going to be left out so they wanted to crown their own champion, which was irrelevant as all those other polls were before the BCS not named AP or UPI...
2004 after the AP left the BCS, they were still irrelevant with the BSC and still are irrelevant to this day...

Just being honest though, Nick Saban never won a NC at LSU. Unfortunately, Saban only has 6 national championships.

For starters, the school has to claim the titles...
