Why is the University of Oklahoma called “OU”?

The story starts with Mizzou, originally the University of the State of Missouri. They didn’t go by USM but rather MSU. They were the first to do this backwards. MU and “Mizzou” quickly became interchangeable with MSU as soon as the 1880s. By 1890, OU and had a charter and MU had a football team. By 1901, MU changed its name to “University of Missouri.” Branding wasn’t what it is now so MU was official but MSU stuck around another 10-15 years interchangeably and Mizzou never left. All teams invited to the Missouri Valley Confrence adopted the same nomenclature.
By 1919 Oklahoma was finally invited to the MVC. They floated the name OK U as a way to fit in, but in the end that wasn’t good enough. They eventually were forced into OU by the 30s.

The Big 8 loved including these schools. Colorado is CU. Kansas is KU.

My college roommate at LSU, who was from Kansas, thought KU was named Kansas University.

Been discussed 100 plus times on here.
It’s an old Big 8 thing.
Question: Why is Missouri’s mascot a tiger?

NU and KU were charter MVC/B6 members.
CU followed suit decades before they joined for no known reason.

“The Missouri Tigers intercollegiate athletics programs represent the University of Missouri, located in Columbia. The name comes from a band of armed Union Home Guards called the Fighting Tigers of Columbia who, in 1864, protected Columbia from Confederate guerrillas during the American Civil War.”
Yes, we are Union.
Yes, we are Union.

All the B6/7/8 talk is fabricated bullshite because these names are predate that conference by decades. 20 minutes of archives searching verifies that.

Nothing wrong with Nebraska, at least they win championships in sports

Same reason University of Texas is now TU.

Texas-Austin is now honorary MVC.
Not a stretch as they were MVC legacy conference for decades.

Because they can. Win some championships and then talk.

Better question: Why aren't we calling MU "Methzou?"
