In 1955 Alabama coach Ears Whitworth goes 0-10 and refuses to start legend Bart Starr.
Vince Lombardi called Starr the greatest winner he had been around.
Starr was the super bowl MVP twice but Ears thought he was not good enough to start for a 0-10 team.
Can anybody name something this bad coaching wise.

My aunt has letters home from my uncle when he was serving in Korea. One of the letters has an entire page complaining about how bad Ears Whitworth is

Lane Kiffin refused to take a ton of easy field goals and continued to go for it on 4th down all game on the Plains and lost a close game.
A real Mario Cristabol coaching moment. Too stupid to take a win when it was just staring at you.
The other was way before my time.

He still beat Kansas twice. You just got set up and you took it hook line and sinker. Worst coach in SEC history but still beat Kansas twice.

There is a reason Ears didn't win and was never heard from again.

Coach's choose the wrong guy all the time.
It really irritates me when people say coaches know more than fans and see all of camp because that's a double sided coin. We all have eyes and can see who performs better on actual gameday and that's all that really matters. There are tonnes of practice warriors who go blank on gameday.
Coaches are human and do in fact have favorites, or guys that they just personally happen to like more or can have a weird bias against as well.
This phenomen was certainly very present at the HS level when i played and i sde it at the college level frequently as well. Butch Jones is hardly the only coach guilty of this.

In 1973 Tennessee was up at home on Georgia 31-28 with 2:32 remaining, fourth down and 2 to go on the Tennessee 28, Bill Battle elected to try for the first down, but FB Steve Chancey was caught for a two-yard loss. Georgia quickly took advantage of the gift and scored the winning TD. We haven't done well with Alabama coaches, so I suspect Pruitt's the last. Now there's a thought - Saban if Heupel moves on.

Coach O going for it on 4th and 1 up 14-0 mid 4th against state. Punt and keep playing defense and he would have still been head coach the next season.

Fourth and Dumb.
quote:
The 1976 Florida Gators were 6–1 and ranked No. 10 coming into the game, and again seeking to secure their first SEC football championship. The Gators held a 27–13 halftime advantage and seemed to have the game in hand until the Bulldogs scored early in the third quarter to cut the lead to 27–20. Then, faced with a fourth-and-one situation at the Gators' own 29-yard-line, coach Doug Dickey decided to go for the first down rather than punt. Gators running back Earl Carr was stopped short by Bulldogs safety Johnny Henderson. Led by quarterback Ray Goff's game management and running back Kevin McLee's 198-yard rushing performance, the Bulldogs seized the momentum and scored three touchdowns on their way to a 41–27 win. After the game, Dickey admitted that "We were not outplayed; we were outcoached. I made some dumb calls." Sports writers seized on Dickey's mea culpa, and in subsequent months and years popularized the phrase "fourth and dumb" to refer to both Dickey's failed fourth down attempt and the game itself

Helped Croom get the SEC Coach of the year award, first bowl appearance in several years. Wonder which coach will get Lebby’d?
