And you wonder why the OG SEC fans think you don't belong.
Edited to educate these tea sip carpet bagging interlopers.
From Southern Living:
quote:
If you're from the South, you've probably been to a meat-and-three. It's the nothing-fancy, no-fuss type of place where you customarily order a main dish and three vegetable side dishes—and it's always serving up the best grub in town. As far as the menu, don't be fooled. Here, vegetables include macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, hash brown casserole, and corn pudding. It's basically like Thanksgiving food, but you're allowed to have it for lunch on a Tuesday. Pretty cool, huh?
It's best to show up to a meat-and-three with a game plan, lest you be blinded by all the creamy, cheesy offerings on the buffet line. Basically, building the perfect plate is a big undertaking. You can't go wrong, but you can certainly go really, really right. Are you a seasoned meat-and-three pro? We'll see about that.
Here's what your meat-and-three order says about you. (Don't forget to always add dessert. Peach cobbler, banana pudding, and chess pie are calling.)

I've been living in the south for over half a century and never once heard that term.
Not that I missed anything, it's just a stupid way to say diner or country kitchen.

Probably time for you and your partner to venture outside of Avondale Estates and Buckhead.
A "meat n three" is a Southern staple.

Maybe, but they give you 6 servings worth of food and it’s like $8.99.
I’ve always preferred their breakfast, but the value is excellent for either.

bullshite. I looked it up. The earliest references to the term on wiki were from like 2009, and it supposedly originated in Nashville.
But growing up I spent about half my life in Nashville, and the other half in north Alabama. Never once heard the term. Just asked my wife, who was born and raised solely in North Alabama if she'd ever heard the term. She had no fricking clue either.
So as best I can tell it's just some recent bullshite people have adopted and it's kind of stupid because you can just say country kitchen or diner a hell of a lot easier.
Reminds me of people acting like Nashville Hot Chicken is some ancient thing. Once again, grew up there and never heard of the shite until a few years ago.
People just inventing history at this point and others going along to fill their desire to fit in.

Can't speak for all of GA, but when I used to work near Duluth we used to hit the Rexall Diner on Buford Hwy for lunch all the time. Great old school drugstore diner & meat and 3 place. Their country fried steak w/white gravy was the best.

Yeah it's not. It's an old term used to describe what may also be commonly called cafeteria style lunch. Used to be really common even in gas stations and some grocery stores throughout Mississippi. Doesn't have to be a diner.
