I can't wait for the LSU-USC game this coming season. What if USC beat LSU? What would the experts say about Brian Kelly?

This is from Sporting News.

I remember when we won 53-54 straight non conference games under Saban and Miles from the 2002 loss at Virginia Tech until the 2016 debacle in Lambeau.

Huh? Y'all lost to Iowa in 2004.

USC is a 7-5 team. Lost a bunch of studs and has a 3 star QB starting.

We should roll

That was a bowl game

if you want to use bowl games, then even playing an SEC team in a bowl would be considered non conference since it doesn’t count towards conference record

Should have specified. It was an NCAA recognized regular season win streak. My bad!

It's almost as if Bobby Stoops handed lil Lincoln the keys to a healthy program or something. Similar to the dude taking over at Michigan, Riley never had to rebuild anything and didn't even have to introduce himself to current players.

The Bert problem in a nutshell at Arkansas. Bielema had a heck of a pedigree on paper. Rose bowl appearance, Big 10 titles, consistent big win seasons. It was like we were stealing him from Wisconsin!

And... it turned out that Barry Alvarez was not only the guy who had built the program that Bert got to coach, he was also still the guy running that program and we weren't getting Barry Alvarez. We also overlooked the many rumors coming out of Wisconsin that Bert was a problem drinker and average game day coach.

So we got Bert. The worst coach to last 5 years in Arkansas history. Followed by Chad Morris, the single worst coach in Arkansas history. Pittman is probably going to go down in history as being a thoroughly average at best Arkansas coach but considering what he was handed I can work with that. At least whoever replaces him won't have had the program burned to the ground.

If USC isn't careful they could find themselves falling into that trap. Because they only keep the good PAC 10 teams on their schedule and add in a bunch of decent to really good Big 10 teams.

Riley is only 40 yrs of age so he can still get a lot better, but he coached OU to three 12-2 seasons and a 9-2 season in 2020. That aside he may be the best qb coach in college football. I'm not sure how many Heisman and NFL qbs he has coached at OU, including when he was OC/QB coach, but it's impressive. He's not a great recruiter, but I think he's a better coach than the credit he gets from some and Finebaum's opinon isn't worth much. His agenda is to get clicks, debate, and attention.

The article link within the article says Brian Kelly is the 2nd most overrated coach.

LINK

quote:

1. Lincoln Riley, USC

74-18 is an impressive record but a case can be made that his teams regress each season. He inherited a loaded OU program from Bob Stoops, made some playoff appearances but fell off in 2020 and 2021. And with a Heisman QB he’s only 19-8 through two seasons at USC and his team took a big step backwards last year.

2. Brian Kelly, LSU

He did a great job at Cincinnati and he made a couple of runs at Notre Dame which isn’t easy but many consider him the best coach without a national title and that’s just not true. Excuses at Notre Dame don’t exist at LSU and so far he’s been average. Like Riley, he didn’t do enough with a Heisman winner because he didn’t address defensive issues.

One of the most bizarre things about Riley at OU...

given the popular narrative that he was quickly eroding the program and he is/was "a fraud"...

Riley has the best winning percentage of any coach in OU history. It's better than Bud Wilkinson, better than Barry Switzer's and better than Bob Stoops percentage records.

Given OU's move to the SEC it is highly likely that Lincoln Riley will be atop of that list forever.

He will go through time as OU's top winning percentage coach and also the biggest pariah in program history.

If LSU goes even 4-1 oh the above, all the window lickers here will scream Kelly is shite.

If LSU goes 5-0, then LSU will not have won impressively enough and Kelly is still shite.

ETA: read quickly and thought that was the first 5 this year. Either way, the point remains.
