Because for most of it's history Texas A&M was a small all male military school (think Citadel) that played most big games on the road.

We were a rent a win and if you have a big all time series advantage and $5 you can get coffee.

Bryant was at an all male military school when he was with A&M. That sort of limits your player base to a degree, although not impossible to win it all.

Stallings was in a similar boat with limited women enrollment starting in 1963. Stallings left in 1971 the same year A&M converted to a standard public school with equal admissions.

A&M had flashes of success in the past as an all male military school but didn't start to show any type of sustained success with it's modern "open to the public" model until the 80's when Jackie Sherrill started coaching.

Obviously there are other differences between A&M and Alabama back then but the above would be the most obvious difference to me.

Same reason Saban was so much better at Alabama than LSU.

Alabama is the common denominator.

It's a place where good coaches become great, elite.

Alabama is 1 of 1. Nobody can or will replicate their success.

Fran gave Saban one of the worst losses of his entire career while Fran was at Alabama.

It seems to me that there has always been a much stronger commitment to football at Alabama than many places and the mindset of the players is not just to play but to win every damn thing. When they get the right coach they are like a sore pecker, hard to beat….

It doesn’t take 50 years to start a winning program.

This is something everyone seems to miss or pretends to when they want to try to make the case that Alabama isn’t special. We win because we expect to. At least that’s what sets the machine in motion.

Bryant was only at A&M for 4 years and left right as he starting to get the team rolling. Stallings was way too young and inexperienced to be a HC at the time. He was in the NFL under Tom Landry for a decade and a HC in the NFL for 4 years before he went to Bama.
