Didn’t realize that Oklahoma had an all turf baseball field till tonight. With Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC, we can add them to the list of schools that have turf fields.
While you “traditionalist” don’t like turf baseball fields, they are becoming more popular thought the country. Having turf fields has many advantages that you simply don’t get from natural. Tennessee is one of the schools that elected to switch to turf once they hired Vitello as it was his request. Vitello rather have turf fields than natural.
Now you see bigger high schools going to all turf baseball fields also. Other than being a traditionalist, what is the big uproar about not liking turf fields?
Tennessee-all turf, except the mound areas
UK- Turf
Vandy- Turf
OU- Turf
Texas- Turf
Mizzou- Turf
Who else in the SEC had turf fields?

It’s the same crybabies that pitch a fit over bat flips.

Only advantage of a turf field is the ability to play on it soon after the rain. Personally I hate playing in turf. The slides are way different. The balls don't slow down. Baseball needs dirt. I guess I'm a baseball purist though.

Yankee schools and southwestern schools.
We have five growing seasons in the true deep South.
Spring, Winter, Summer, Fall .... and baseball turf seasons.
Green stuff never stops growing in the true south.

A&M had nearly a foot of water standing in the outfield for the Arkansas series and was playing on it within 90 minutes. Granted it took work but for crews that are prepared, they can pretty much nullify that advantage.

Wrong! It’s easier to maintain and cost less to maintain through out the year. With an all Turf field you don’t need but half as many people as you would it was natural to maintain it.
In the Deep South, it rains a lot in the spring. In East Tennessee in February it’s still cold and grass doesn’t grow the same early February and March. But as you look around the country, a lot of school are going to turf, regardless of geographical locations.

Balls may not slow down, but you don’t have to worry about bad hops either. When players are hitting the ball 90-100mph almost every hit, you don’t want a ball at 100 mph take a bad bounce and catch ya in the mouth.

I hear Augusta and St. Andrews are switching over this winter.
Far superior experience.

Don’t need a tarp for when it rains.
Less people to maintain it.
Cheaper to maintenance than natural field.
These are just a couple, but you get the point . Or at least I hope you do anyways.

I think high schools started seeing how easy it was to maintain once colleges started going to it and they followed. Not many high school have a full fields crew that can roll out a tarp when it rains. I would think it’s more beneficial financially to high schools than colleges. Most colleges not gonna miss $24-$50K a year maintaining it. But that’s a lot of money for most high schools.

It’s always and only about $.
If costs were the same everyone would prefer a natural surface over plastics

Baseball on turf is for communists.

Nobody should have to play on those Nicky mouse turf fields. We supposed to be SEC.
Posted on 6/3/24 at 9:35 pm to BigDickRick16
we should switch football fields and golf courses to artificial too

So you’re poor and scared of getting hit in the mouth. If we ever find ourselves in such a position we’ll keep your suggestion in mind.

Of course, if all the high schools are going for it, that must be the way to go.
Playing on a manicured grass field is one of the biggest perks you can offer a prospect. Not having one, in an area where it is feasible, is really saying that you care more about penny pinching than providing the best for your players.

Not even close! Tennessee is in the middle of $100 million renovations to its stadium. Just to give you an idea the amount of money being spent, Oklahoma State only spent $60 million to build its nice stadium they have. Tennessee had Turf till Vitello showed up. Vitello wanted turf and Tennessee switched.

May want to do something differently when it comes to baseball and facing the Vols. Schloss is 1-4 against Vitello since taking the aTm job. Y’all can call Vitello daddy going forward.
I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if we ever found ourslef in a situation where aTm is beating Tennessee in baseball.

Turf field is the new way, and more and more schools will continue to go to them. Let’s just see how the recruiting rankings at Tennessee.
2020- #6 class
2021- #5 class
2022- #5 class
2023- #4 class
2024- #1 class
2025- #3 class
2026- #3 class
**Perfect Game Rankings**
Seems to me that Vitello doesn’t haven’t any issues bringing top talent to play on turf.

When next season starts, Tennessee will be finished with its $100 million renovation/expansion. Vitello is also one of the top 10 highest paid chances in the entire country. Money isn’t an issue in Knoxville. Tennessee is on turf only because Vitello wanted it. UT had given Vitello everything he’s asked for and will continue to do so, regardless of the cost.
Just got shits and giggles, Tennessee is also currently in the middle of $337 million renovations to Neyland Stadium. That’s $437 million for just in renovations to Neyland and Lindsey Nelson.
