Somebody sell me on the defense this year. Strengths/weaknesses, players to look out for, and overall expectations. Football.

Just need them to hold teams under 50 and Nuss and the boyz will handle the rest!

If we're just top 50-75, we'll make a strong run at something...

Baker runs an aggressive defensive scheme whilst House runs a preventative scheme. It shouldn't be hard to improve just on scheming alone.

We really don't know. We need lots of guys to take a step forward this year. But we have the best coaching staff to handle the situation. We'll see.

I think its odd how LSU managed to have 3 D-linemen drafted with that trash defence last year; to me, it says we had talent that wasn't properly coached.

I just don’t see how the young corners get worse. I also am excited to see corners being aggressive and not playing 8-10 yards off the ball.

I am interested to see the jump that Womack makes. Also curious to see if Perkins can make a Damone Clark type jump under Baker.

Other than Perkins and maybe Womack, there really isn't anyone on the defense that gets me that excited for this year.

They'll be better overall, but I think they are severely lacking in talent compared to previous years.

Who we get at DT in the portal will be a big determining factor, but I honestly can't see us being better than an average to slightly above average defensive unit.

It won't be good.

The glimmer of hope is the new staff getting them to play as hard as possible, making them maybe a 75 in the country type unit.

Here’s the most positive spin I can give on the defense. They won’t be on the field that much.

Last year, we couldn’t help putting the ball in the end zone with big chunk plays on offense. This year will be different.

We’re going to establish a heavy run game by imposing our will with the OL. We’ll still see Nuss sling it, but I think we’re going to be eating a lot more clock this year.

This in turn, will give our defense minimal time on the field.

Even if they were as bad as last year (which I absolutely don’t see that happening) they’ll be less of a factor due to much less time on the field.

I think the CB spot will be better. I also think the LB spot will be better because Weeks will likely start. Finally, I think Baker will do a better job of getting Perkins in spots to make plays.

LSU didn't have great talent. Particularly in the secondary. House made things worse by trying to play essentially a "bend but don't break defense". The problem was everyone was still confused and teams were able to easily hit big plays despite LSU trying to do everything they could to limit them.

LSU probably would have been better off trying to be overly aggressive. Sure opponents would have still hit some huge plays. But that approach may have also created just enough big plays defensively to allow the offense to overcome them.

I think Baker is going to be more aggressive. That doesn't mean the defense will be dominant (there are still talent deficiencies). Opponents will still hit their fair share of big plays. But I think that style is at least going to give LSU a fighting chance vs. just helplessly allowing opponents to march downfield at will.

With all of the staff and personnel changes no one really knows, we just have to hope for the best. Last year anyone who said that Perkins might struggle because he was leaning a new position was downvoted to hell and look what happened.

Bo Davis

And while I'm not as big on Corey Raymond as some, he's still a big upgrade over last year.

Alot depends on what happens at DT...way too early to tell. Fall camp reports will let us know what we can expect from this defense

With the better staff I think LSU defense will be better than last year. If we add depth to the DL which CBK is doing. LSU's offense can score against anyone. We will have a more balanced attack this year with this OL. Expect to run the ball more than last year. We have more depth and experience in the secondary and Perk and the LB's are way better than average. The more aggressive attacking defense also will be to our advantage. The LSU defense will be the surprise of the year along with our running game.

All I want is for them to be like the 2022 defense (minus sucking in the first half of the game). You don't have to be great just hit hard and make stops when you need it most.
