Funny. I couldn't remember what he had done before UK then saw he had taken both UMass and Memphis to the Final Four and has several 30-win seasons. One of the most accomplished basketball coaches around.

Hilarious y’all don’t see this is the same exact thing. Cal is washed. 1 tourney win in 5 years with an NBA roster. He’s an awful bench coach. And he won’t have close to the talent he had at Kentucky.

I'm gonna assume someone was excited about Sun Belt Billy with zero evidence.

Stan Heath, John Pelphrey, Mike Anderson.

I am 100% certain Cal will bring us more success than these. Musselman confirmed you can win and recruit here despite the 20 years of meh.

We have zero returning players, zero transfers, zero incoming players.

No one can fill those spots faster or better than Calipari with a huge NIL. The coach don't matter if you don't have a team. First things first.

He had the best 1 and done talent in the country at UK. Doubling the NIL budget won't double the talent. In fairness, everyone may be paying double for the same talent in the NIL era, but the point is that talent was never the problem for Cal at UK.

I don't care what NIL Arkansas has, no way he gets the talent to Arkansas like he did at UK.

However, he was really good at UMass and Memphis before UK, so he has already proven he can win without the top talent. One of the most accomplished coaches anywhere.

The question is...Will Arkansas get 1990-2020 Calipari or 2021-2024 Calipari?

I think a lot of Barners were trying to convince themselves it was a good hire, but no one was excited about Harsin. Boise wasn't doing anything special after the Dan Hawkins and Chris Petersen years.

FWIW, I thought Harsin could be a good hire for the Barn, but it wasn't like BSU was routinely appearing in BCS/NY6 bowl games under Harsin.

His piss poor recruiting after Gus ignoring the OL the last years he was HC cannot be understated. I am absolutely convinced I could pick 10 Auburn posters on this board, pay them $100K a year each, and they would have done a better job scouting, recruiting, and signing players than Harsin and his staff did.

He will absolutely get similar talent at Arkansas for several reasons.

1. He’s Coach Cal. Those recruits are committed to him, not Kentucky. He got big time recruits at stops other than Kentucky. If Saban took the Ole Miss job, he would still get five stars based on his brand.

2. Arkansas’s NIL budget for basketball is very large.

3. Arkansas as a program is capable of elite recruiting. We signed three five stars two years ago under not Coach Cal.

He didn't get them at Michigan State. That said, Arkansas was getting elite talent under Musselman.

I mean, Aggy was thinking "how many" rather than "if" Jumbo would bring home a title and we see how that turned out. I don't think there has been a bigger gap between expectations and reality in recent sports history.

Exactly. NIL was not a factor at UK. He had top recruiting classes every year and couldn't coach them to a Final 4 since 2015. His coaching left a lot to be desired at UK with the talent he brought in.

I don't disagree with any of that. I'm thinking more of UK and Duke battling for the top 5-10kids coming out of HS. Getting 4-5 kids so good you knew they were 1-and-done before they stepped foot on campus.

Again, Cal has proven he doesn't need those best in the country kids to win. He and the team may do even better with kids he develops over two or three years.

I think he's a good coach. I don't think Florida was excited about him very much and they really haven't given him a fair shake. It's hard to recruit well without support, and Florida has been lacking in that area in recent history. Probably lacking due to lack of excitement. Almost immediately it seemed like much of the fan base turned on him.

I think if LSU had hired him, they would have been more successful. LSU gives good support, Florida hasn't since Urban. That program needs a splash hire to revitalize it unless Napier can really get them coached up and turned around this year.
