Coach Oats, like many other coaches, is a fiery competitor who takes up for his players. It's easy to dislike a person who continually kicks your team's arse.

bama fans on an LSU message board bragging about men’s basketball and it’s LSU fans that are obsessed? 
college basketball is a joke of a sport….the regular season means nothing…the conference tournaments mean nothing…and the championship tournament is set up for people who don’t give a shite about anything other than to drink and bet and watch upsets happen in a “one and done” elimination setup which is a joke of a way to crown the best team

Not really, no. It was fun to be winning but it doesn’t change that its championship process is a joke.
Half the teams don’t even try in the conference tournaments and March Madness is popular and exciting for casuals and brutal for people who actually care about the schools and the players…the format, the travel, the quick turnarounds followed by weeks off, etc.
It’s just a lot of mediocrity:
-regular season champions brag
-conference champions who get auto bids to the tournament brag
-sweet 16 teams brag
-elite 8 teams brag
-final four teams brag
-the champion whoever survives has the ultimate brag, but are so random on any given year
fans who don’t make the tournament mock fans who lose on any of the above stages. it’s all pointless with no true measure of success, too many teams make the “dance” and there needs to be series for the sport to not be a joke
