OU and TX fans - The real questions

1. For fans traveling to the games ahead of time, what's the best places to eat in town? Let's get a list going.
2. What sites are you curious about in regards to food when traveling?
3. How do you rate your tailgating, on a scale of Ivy League school (bad) to LSU (amazing food and drink)?
4. How bad does traffic get on game day? Are Austin and Norman built to handle it, or should people expect traffic jams that put China to shame?
5. Drinking/night life - How's the experience? Worth indulging or better off chilling in your hotel rooms?
6. Bonus points for BBQ places that are the most authentic to what someone would think of BBQ for your state.
7. Oklahoma - your first road game is at Auburn. What do you hope to see? (I'm not an Auburn fan, but definitely make sure you see the pre-game Eagle Flight)
8. Texas - your first road game is at Vandy, and your other two are at Arkansas and A&M, two places you've visited a lot. So, what are you hoping to experience in Nashville?
9. Which sites are you looking forward to the most to travel to?
And to get it out of the way:
I'm an Alabama fan
It sucks seeing players transfer out but nothing I can do about it
I hope the new coach ends up being a good-to-great hire, but the jury's still out
I'm glad my Grandfather lived long enough to see both Coach Bryant and most of Coach Saban's tenure. I wish my mom had been able to see Coach Saban's career; the last title she saw was 1992. So I consider myself lucky to be able to have watched this run.

Not an OU or UT fan but live in Austin.
As far as Austin:
1. For fans traveling to the games ahead of time, what's the best places to eat in town? Let's get a list going.
Fresas, Perlas, ATX Cocina, Peche, Home Slice, Red Farm, Taverna
2. What sites are you curious about in regards to food when traveling?
N/A
3. How do you rate your tailgating, on a scale of Ivy League school (bad) to LSU (amazing food and drink)?
UT is on the edge of downtown so don't expect to see the massive RV lots and tailgate spreads you see at other schools. Lots of tailgating northeast of the stadium but all the tents are set up and rented out by a company to private parties. As an LSU grad I'd call the tailgating good but not great.
4. How bad does traffic get on game day? Are Austin and Norman built to handle it, or should people expect traffic jams that put China to shame?
Austin is in a perpetual mess of traffic. Honestly I've had better traffic experiences leaving UT games than driving in Austin during regular rush hour.
5. Drinking/night life - How's the experience? Worth indulging or better off chilling in your hotel rooms?
Dirty 6th, West 6th, East Side, South Congress. There's a ton of nightlife in Austin and you'd be crazy to spend the weekend in your hotel. Get out and enjoy the city.
6. Bonus points for BBQ places that are the most authentic to what someone would think of BBQ for your state.
There's a Coopers and Stubb's closeby. If you're willingto drive out a bit head to Salt Lick, Black's, or Franklin
7. Oklahoma - your first road game is at Auburn. What do you hope to see? (I'm not an Auburn fan, but definitely make sure you see the pre-game Eagle Flight)
N/A
8. Texas - your first road game is at Vandy, and your other two are at Arkansas and A&M, two places you've visited a lot. So, what are you hoping to experience in Nashville?
People actually go to the game when they visit Nashville?
9. Which sites are you looking forward to the most to travel to?
Not what you asked but I'm looking forward to having an LSU game close by most years. With LSU/A&M off of thanksgiving it's more likely I can make a couple of games without traveling all the way to Baton Rouge

quote:Best bbq and local food
2. What sites are you curious about in regards to food when traveling?
quote:Above average. Nothing special, but a fun time nonetheless. The school has events, including "Longhorn City Limits" before each game which tends to get decent artists (Big Boi and Gary Clark Jr. were some names in 2023)
3. How do you rate your tailgating, on a scale of Ivy League school (bad) to LSU (amazing food and drink)?
quote:Pretty bad, but nothing obscene. Tbh it depends what's going on in Austin that weekend. Georgia is F1 weekend, so that could be pretty rough, but the track is miles and miles away from downtown/campus/DKR
4. How bad does traffic get on game day? Are Austin and Norman built to handle it, or should people expect traffic jams that put China to shame?

quote:Fun drinking options and hopefully an easy victory. I'm not a country music fan myself but I'm sure that aspect will intrigue a ton of visiting fans.

quote:I'm personally looking forward to South Carolina, Georgia, Auburn, and Tennessee.
9. Which sites are you looking forward to the most to travel to?
I've been to Oxford for a few games. That place is incredible for college football. They do it right, and the square is electric.
HTH - looking forward to all of it

If they sober up enough in the morning to make the trip.

I hear that. After moving to Virginia, most games are a grind to drive to. Even the game at UK was 6 hours one way. Only Knoxville is less than 6 (still 5, but okay). Knoxville traffic is horrendous though, so it's 5 hours to reach the city and what often feels like another hour or so to reach the stadium.

I can speak on three of those places, but not like a real fan can.
South Carolina is amazing - they'll pack the stadium even if they haven't won a game all year.
Auburn is a lot of fun. I went one year with a girl I was dating (whole family of Auburn fans) to a game against a lesser opponent (G5 I think) and the stadium was still packed and everyone friendly as hell. Eagle Flight was worth it.
Knoxville is less scenic, but good food - just be prepared for traffic problems. The town gets them even when there's no game going on.
I keep meaning to make a trip to Athens. I've got friends near there and would love to get a tour of the city (lived in Atlanta for a few years but never made it out that way when it would have been way more convenient sadly)

OU tailgating has been held back by the former president for decades . They didn’t want it to take away from the beauty of the campus . They just changed the rules recently allow for closer tailgating to try and get closer to sec tailgating but I think at OUs rate it would take 100 years for that to happen . I would say for sure OU tailgating is below average to average and prob in bottom half of sec tailgating from what I have heard. Campus corner is more like a gameday party rather than tailgating , its were most people go to drink before the game and the marching band goes into the area on game days. It’s about 5 blocks away from the stadium . Traffic is bad of course they turn all traffic going out going towards OKC and Dallas but they are reworking highway 9 which is the alt route out and it’s a mess , haven’t been there since Oct but it seemed like it was a year out from finishing . Food is limited imo around campus but loads of paces to eat in Norman and downtown OKC . I personally travel to brick town to eat on the way home to Tulsa .
I prob won’t go to many road games due to working almost every Monday thru Sat except when I got to OU home games. Think most OU fans are loving the idea of playing good to great teams each week . I think the best and worst place most OU fans wanna go to is LSU. Some do because of the experience but some don’t because of the history of already seeing LSU fans in action before . I will say I hope it doesn’t go bad for OU fans at LSU because when they return I will make it a mission to return the favor .

How the hell could anybody compete with the LSU tailgate scene in terms of food?

Austin: Matts El Rancho. Get the Bob and Asadero Tacos. Terry Blacks for BBQ. Go out on West 6th. Buford’s is the Bama bar.

Must visit the Mont - Norman staple, order a swirl, the food is not that good but the drink are. O'Connells, Tarahumaras (Mexican), Othellos (Italian), Neighborhood Jam (Breakfast/brunch), The Standard.

Super interested in eating/drinking the "must try's" of every SEC town.
quote:
How do you rate your tailgating?
Not terrible but lots of room for improvement. Didn't have very many lively games in the Big12 so tailgating took a backseat, especially after COVID.
quote:
How bad does traffic get on game day?
Not bad at all if you get there 3 hours before kick. Lots of free parking on the curbs of neighborhoods close to the campus.
quote:
Drinking/night life - How's the experience? Worth indulging or better off chilling in your hotel rooms?
More of a college/young people scene. Norman is very much a college town, but some late night spots to grab a quick drink. My favorite is Royal Pipes for a victory cigar.

I hope to see us beat the piss out of Auburn.

LSU, Ole Miss, Bama, Georgia, the real UT. In no particular order

Great thread. Looking forward to having Oklahoma and Texas in the conference.

Shouldn't be on the list because we're certainly not at that level. Some of those clods back home can barely boil water.
Because of the actions of our previous uppity fig school President attacking our tailgate scene, I'd say we're probably somewhere between "happy meals for everyone" and "basic bitch backyard cookout".
For now...

That... fricking sucks. Damn.
Well, if any conference can jumpstart a tailgating scene, it's the SEC.

That's why I ended with "for now". What our fanbase experiences on the road in the SEC tailgate scene, will be exported back home I'm sure of it (except for fat drunk people fist-fighting in the grass). And that's a good thing.

Every fanbase has some assholes in it, but I can say without question, as long as you aren't too thin skinned to a little friendly ribbing. You will not need to bring any food or drink with you and you will be full and drunk before game time.

True - we expect teams to provide their own fat drunk people to fight.
Except Vandy. Those are fat, drunk people in spelling bees.

You may see fat drunk people lining up to run the Oklahoma drill on each-other in the grass, though.
Do not be alarmed or alert the authorities.
