When a school loses their coach, the portal automatically opens for 30 days for their players.

Oh for fricks sake some of you have absolutely NO reading comprehension but I guess I should have expected that.

You have been melting like fricking popsicles on here about the players portaling out and how unfair it is cause now, the portal is closed for other teams so Bama’s options to get players from the portal are limited.

Would you have rather him done it a bit earlier to eliminate this dynamic or waited maybe a week or two so that it would limit these player’s options on where they could portal due to registration deadlines at other schools?

I should have known by now to not expect any reasonable, rational responses from Bama fans.

Jeez dude, you asked if we were upset over the timing, and we said no wtf

Florida State did it right when Jimbo was head coach in waiting and took over for Bowden...Saban had no one to take over for him...

Not sure if "head coach in waiting" is right or wrong. It took us less than 3 days to hire a new coach.

Wow. I’ll say it again: these “WHY AREN’T YOU MELTING?!?!!!” melts are just about the strangest phenomenon on this board.

we can replace Bond.

What the hell is so great about Isiah Bond's receiving stats. A little over 600 yards and 4 TDs. Jermaine Burton was over 800 yards with 8 TDs and he ain't all that. This is a joke over here.

We haven’t hired anyone or payed a dime in buyouts for 17 years and we had a top of the line coach in 46 hours. Over that same time period, AU, L21U and Tennessee have collectively had 19 coaches. Let that sink in.

I think Chicken's point is that Jimbo was already in the FSU staff and had recruited most of the roster. Bama hired a guy from across the country that the players don't know.

There’s never a good time to retire when you’ve been so successful for so long.

If he had done it after the rose bowl he would’ve been accused of trying to steal the spotlight of the national championship game. He gave them 2 days to talk about the game afterwards as well then announced at the end of day 2. I thought it was a classy move by Saban.

I agree with you completely. I appreciate everything Coach Saban has done for the University but this was not handled very professionally in my opinion.

That being said, he owes Alabama nothing .

Doesn’t bother me. There’s no such thing as a “good time” for a GOAT to retire. The players that are in the portal would have hit the portal no matter when he announced, imo.

All things considered, I’m pleased with how the AD has handled it all, and intrigued to see what the future holds.

I'm a bit upset at the timing. I think he probably had 3 more productive years left, and I think the team has the makings of being really good again next year.

It’s a point worth discussing and certainly would be ideal if it could have been pulled off, but there is no way that model would have worked with Saban/Alabama. Desirable (coordinator level, HC potential) coaches simply didn’t want to work with Saban for long. It was a massive problem towards the end, and really the only major gripe against him. Saban was never going to retire on a set timetable of, say, “three more years” where such a HCIW model would have worked. He’s too attached to the game and was always going to go out when he felt he couldn’t do it any more at the level he saw fit. And that’s what he did, simple as that.

The only notable or surprising thing here is OP’s debilitating emotion and lack of intelligence.

OP: “Hey guys! I’m not here to troll, but aren’t y'all like SOOOO mad at Saban”

Bama fans: “we’re not mad at Saban. He earned the right to set his own terms.”

OP: “OH MY frickING GOD YOU IDIOTS! YOU’RE LITERALLY LIKE SO frickING DUMB!! YOU SHOULD BE LIKE SOOOO MAD RIGHT NOW!!!!! ARGH!!!!!”

No. In this era, I don't know that there really is a good time. It just is what it is. All DeBoer can do is talk to all of the players and support those who want to be at Bama.

There is no good time to retire in the free agency era. It is treated like the school fired the coach, so your entire roster gets opened up to be pillaged. Alabama probably handled this about as efficiently as you can in the hopes of re-recruiting the roster. Seriously, 48 hours from retirement to hiring the replacement is insane. You can do that when your coach is a retirement risk. Hard to do that when you haven't been prepping for a termination for years.

Alabama was going to lose a few more guys that Saban tried to keep on the roster like Bond, Niblack, Ricks, Amos, and a few others. That's just the reality of coaching transitions in the free agency era. The transfers before Saban retired was largely the typical bottom quarter of the roster Alabama has been accustom to seeing each Winter. It is encouraging that there wasn't a mass exodus the day after Saban retired but instead a slow trickle of onesies and twosies. Of course, plenty of time for it to get worse.

Seems like it would have been better for the program to either announce it after the Rose Bowl

If he did that and the candidate was DeBoer...how many players would lose in the two weeks vs 48 hrs from rose bowl loss to new hire

No not upset at Saban at all. Most people knew it was coming sometime soon. Best to just cut the cord, like ripping a bandaid off, and get it over with. Saban earned the right to do it his way when he wanted to ....
