By retiring today, the first day of classes, those early enrollees are now blocked from getting out of their NLI.

Not the incoming players. That’s only previous members of the team. Recruits that signed but didn’t enroll in classes yet can get out of their NLI. The ones that early enrolled had class today and cannot.

Reports say he referenced health issues in his announcement to the team. Perhaps the decision was rather sudden.

Again, that is for players that are already on the team. NLI blocks you from transferring your first year once you have attended classes in this case. The recruits that have not enrolled yet are free to get out of their NLI since he quit, but not the ones that started classes today.
There is a difference between players on NLI and players that were on the team the previous season.
