Is the portal overrated?

Players have always been able to transfer if they were willing to sit out a year. For the most part I haven't seen players go in year one and make a huge difference. And most of the one who did, didn't look as good as they looked with their former school. Example: Jordan Addison.
I'd say RB and DL are probably the two positions that would be easiest to transfer and then year one make a huge impact as those are the positions that are easiest to learn. I see more of an impact with NIL and recruiting than the portal.

Probably.
Based on results, I think it's an issue where everyone is hoping for the next Joe Burrow but you're way more like to get the next Blake Barnett.

Nix, Penix, Daniels - all transfers
Having 2-3 years out of a transfer QB is obviously preferable.

Washington and Texas aren't in the CFP without the portal (Penix & Ewers).
Bama likely is the heavy favorite if they executed properly in the portal (replacing Milroe).
Studs weren't sitting out a year to transfer, the portal is a game changer.. especially in the case of rebuilds.

It gives teams like OM and Miz an opportunity to fill gaps immediately instead of waiting three years.
It gives players a chance to play, find a better fit, or step up their league. Look at the Heisman finalists and half the playoff QBs.
Mostly it’s about money though.

There's a post right now on the front page about an SEC team hitting the portal hard.
Really not trying to flame, but that team had the greatest recruiting class of all time two years ago, then finished 7–6 twice and fired their coach.
And now they're having to "hit the portal hard?"
What the hell are we (collectively) doing to college football that any of this makes sense?
I feel like we're on the verge of doing some real harm to this sport.
Sure there is more parity, but IMO the product on the field has gotten worse, not better. It's like everyone is becoming equally bad, which just makes you wonder if a lot of these guys are in that portal for a reason.

We’ve gotten some quality guys from the portal. Leary may not have panned out but guys like Ray Davis, Alex Raynor, Marques Cox, and Keeshawn Silver all had good, immediate reps in areas of need.
But I feel like we have some pretty good talent evaluators in general, so that helps IMO. Looking forward to some of the UGA guys we’ve picked up in this off-season.

It certainly helps mediocre teams get better faster but if a good team is trying to become ELITE, the portal is not your answer.
The QB position will always be an outlier here because of the impact an elite QB can have on a team relative to other positions.

Yes, LSU found out the hard way this year; sometimes talent is not worth getting a player who is a bad fit and is locker room cancer. Buyer, be aware; I think LSU ended up with buyer's remorse on a few players.

If you get a player that can be there multiple years, no. Look at Daniels for the latest example.

Worked out pretty good for LSU, got 2 Heisman trophy winners in the last 5 years.

IMO the portal is a mixed bag just like high school recruiting. You hit or miss on the players you sign. The difference is that with high school recruits the coaches spend years developing relationships with them and their families. They have a better idea of what type of person they're getting and the player knows what to expect when he arrives on campus. The portal is more akin to proposing to someone you've been dating for two weeks. It's a crap shoot, and the player comes in with virtually no loyalty to the school, the coaches or the players who have been in the system for years. Look at what happened when FSU missed the playoffs. They started scattering like rats on a sinking ship.
