They basically made a graph trying to determine which coaches inherited the best situations when they came in. They call it the 3rd base index

Explain this to me like I'm a 5 year old pStephen.

Considering how high the team talent is for Kelly on this datapoint I'm thinking they couldnt factor in (or factored in AFTER) he had to recruit half a new team coming in to only 38 scholarship players.

It includes transfers to fill out a roster

it isn't the first head coaching job for a lot of coaches on that list.
brohm, smith, leipold, fisch and elko are straight killers with the jobs they've done.

The portal cuts both ways. He was able to fill gaps well enough to beat Alabama and win the West through the portal.

I don't see Nick Saban on those graphs.

No 247 composite in the age of the dinosaurs.

But we can all agree that Saban inherited a shite show of a program and what he's done is a damn miracle

Whoever made the criteria for that is literally retarded if they think Venables had one of the better situations coming in. He had a mass exodus of players including the QB who went on to have one of the better college seasons of all time the very next season

Marcus Freeman can't possibly be at number 4. We all know Brian Kelly can't recruit.

Miracle?
Lol
You are correct though.
Saban built Bama into the wrecking ball that it became.

Oklahoma was an absolute dumpster fire when Venables took over

Also, look what Brian Harsin did to Hugh Freeze

No one in their right mind would take what Venables had his first year over what say Kirby had at Georgia his first year. There is absolutely 0 chance. Compare the rosters

This is actually very interesting.
Day is 55–6 (.902) with three conference titles.
Helton went 46–24 (.657), while Orgeron went 51–20 (.718). Both won one conference title, but given the 2019 hardware, Orgeron clearly gets a pass here. Thus, Clay Helton is certainly the most underachieving at the top, given his inherited talent.
Maybe still a little too early for Freeman, Sark, and Venables.
Both Taggart and Harsin going 9–12 (.429) in two years is pathetic.

There's some context missing in certain scenarios (IE Matt Luke having a better situation to take over than a lot of coaches - staring down a massive probation and multi-year bowl ban) but it's an interesting chart.

This chart makes Lance Leopold and Jeff Brohm look like the best program builders in the game.

Damn Bama fans and their reading comprehension. The Chart Title, “First Year Power Five Head Coaches (since 2015)”
