It almost defies the laws of probability.

They had all of the momentum in the world.
Spurrier Fun and Gun era, with a national title.
The epic Urban run with 2 national titles.
A state with some of the best High School talent in the country.

How in the world did they manage to screw that up to the degree that they have ?
How many hiring busts in a row can they possibly make ?

They have been bad for so long now that 17 year old recruits aren't even aware that they were ever good, let alone dominant.

Florida is like UGA (pre-2021) - they have no business not being in the playoff mix every year.

I give them a pass for hiring Mullen- he was their OC under those NC years with Urban and Mullen overachieved at State.

But all those other coaching hires have been abysmal.

Also understand that the Florida fanbase isn't like the UGA or LSU or some other blueblood fanbases. When Florida football sucks, the fanbase disappears. When that happens, it is even harder to pull yourself out of the gutter. LSU for example could have back to back to back losing seasons and still sell out their stadium, just like South Carolina does year after year. Florida doesn't have that level of fanbase. Their fans are fair weather trash and the fanbase is the foundation of an athletic program. Castles made of sand.

the truth is that it can, does, and will happen to every program.

Castles made of sand. Florida washing out to sea with the tide. The gulls cry, the sea oats wave goodbye, and the sun sets.

A little Indian brave who before he was ten,
Played war games in the woods with his Indian friends.
And he built a dream that when he grew up
He would be a fearless warrior, Indian Chief.
Many moons passed, and more the dream grew strong,
Until tomorrow he would sing his first war song,
And fight his first battle,
But something went wrong,
Surprise attack killed him in his sleep that night.

What probably surprises me the most is how they managed to plunge into obscurity at the same time their natural in-state rivals (FSU and Miami) were doing even worse.

They had every advantage and still managed to frick it up.

Down the street you can hear her scream you're a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
And now he stands outside
And all the neighbors start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

Here’s a question. Is Georgia so good because Florida sucks or does Florida suck because Georgia is so good? Kirby has sucked the life out of Florida in all phases of the football. He recruits circles around Florida and since arriving in Athens has played endless mind games in the recruiting game and on the field.
Florida beat Georgia in 2020 when they had an outstanding QB paired with a very good OC and Georgia had to play Dwan Mathis, the same guy who hit a teammate in the head w a pass during warmups on the sideline.
Other than that anomaly of a season, Georgia had crushed Florida.

But you can really go back to 2007. Before the end zone celebration, Florida only lost 2 games to Georgia in 17 or so years. After that game, Georgia is 9-7 and 6-2 under KS

Their winning anything of significance is more an assault on the laws or probability. They had a program for almost 100 years before the managed to win a conference title of any kind. They are traditionally on the level of Vandy and Mississippi State. Georgia Tech and Tulane won multiple SEC titles before Florida managed to win one. What they are now is what they have been traditionally...a pretty good to often shitty football program.

Rhetorical I assume since you are talking about a school that hired a Zook, McElwain, a Mullen (when the AD knew him very well and knew his ceiling) and Napier. I can remember when they fired Andy Lopez as baseball coach and was like what the hell? Seems like they hired our McMahon to succeed him. Maybe it's more like finding a acorn by blind hog with Spurrier, Corch and O'Sullivan.

Had they paired Mullen with a top end DC and a couple recruiters and he probably wins the conference at least once.

But… instead they hired Grantham and here we are.

That fact erodes the argument that Mullen was a competent HC. Unless you're intimating that beyond calling plays, Cousin Eddie had handed over all other decision-making responsibilities to someone else.

Mullen was the one who brought Grantham with from from Mississippi State and who didn't care about recruiting so his staff was full of coaches who didn't put effort into recruiting.
