Yes. That’s exactly why.

Our best defenses have length, our 2 years we were bad on defense we were small. Oats is getting a lot of length this offseason so I would bank on our defense being top 25 again

I'm glad Michael Jordan was 6'10. He would've sucked as a defender had he only been 6'6. Or Jimmy Butler Or Damon Staudamire Or Kemba Walker or Isiah Thomas or...

Rylan was about to say “Weakass Drop Coverage” what he fails to realize is when you have an elite rim protector the drop coverage is a great defense

Sorry you can't keep up. Perhaps the barn board would be more suitable for you?

-Griff is an elite college defender.
-Griff is the worst defender, statistically
-Oats played him consistently on the opponent's player.
-That's because he was tall.
-Not all good defenders are tall.

Is that easier to follow?

He's the perfect off ball guard for our offense. Kind of reminds me of a bigger version of Wrightsell.

I came here to learn. Obviously Griff played the toughest player on D because he's tall. This board is loaded with a wealth of info and expertise.

Dont be obtuse. You are clearly melting bc RG went to the portal. He didnt like it here. Was he your fav player? Thats how it is now in the NCAA. Follow him to his new team or quit bitching.

Q got a bag last year, did that make him elite? How'd that work out for Memphis? What about us?

Griffen had the best size/athleticism combo for checking big guards for us but the results were pretty inconsistent.

Griffen drew those assignments for a combination of reasons.

Sam Walters could make it work sometimes on a given possession, but Sam can't consistently guard a good offensive player on the perimeter for a whole game. He would get cooked over and over again.

Sears and Estrada aren't great defenders and when you combine that with their size, they would eventually just get bullied more times than not. You also don't want your two primary ball handlers and play makers to wear themselves out on the defensive end when you know you need them at their best on the other end of the floor since you are a weak defensive team to begin with.

Wrightsell is a guy that can contribute in that space, and did so in parts of the season, but his injuries obviously limited him greatly in the latter parts of the season.

Cosby and Dioubate didn't play regularly enough to even be mentioned in this conversation.

Kris Parker would have probably helped a lot with that, but he wasn't available unfortunately.

So yeah, Griffen's height did play a factor in why he was given some of the assignments he was given. He had the most length of any guy on the roster that would be able to consistently be an above average perimeter defender. We needed him to be a lot better in that role than he was though. That is just one of the reasons this was such a poor defensive unit for the majority of the season.

You sound like a condescending prick. We all know oats put RG on their best player. He was longer and more athletic than our other guards . That doesn't mean he was great at it. You keep saying he is an elite defender but he wasn't.

6'6 is great length for a 2-guard. Butler (6'7) has incredible length for a 2-guard. Thomas racked up steals and played hard, but he was a liability in that era and would be even more so in today's game where 6'4 PGs are rather commonplace. Same with Stoudamire. And then Kemba Walker? Kemba. Walker. That's an example you give of a good defender who lacks length? You're just exposing yourself with every post...
