Because Hurley wouldn't leave UCONN. He's about to go back-to-back. Hurley is also from the northeast. Why leave a program that you've built into a fricking juggernaut? He's going to make over $7m this season with his bonuses.

Cool… but it’s not really a “hard” offense. It’s just analytics at its basics. Screens and shoot threes. You could hire an assistant in the NBA and get the same output.

My point is Oats doesn’t have the stuff that makes you go “wow he’s an NBA guy”. You don’t see the nuanced scheming. Most of the guys like Pop, Thibs, Spoelstra, Rivers, etc. are very strong in that area. Even Donovan, who played PG in the NBA.

It’s a whole different coaching style there than in college. I don’t think there would be interest for Oats in the first place

This would be an absolute disaster for Alabama. His buyout is 12 million.

If we can't hold on to Oats, we will never be an elite basketball program.

They would offer hurley $10 mil before they would pay oats that. Oats hasn’t won a national championship like hurley has and possibly two.

You don’t offer $10 mil a yr to a coach that hasn’t won a natty. Lol

I hope you're right. But UK basketball isn't Nebraska football. They aren't even UK football. They are a premier program. It's hard to turn down. BAMA is about to lose several players to NIL. He won't have to worry about that at UK. Replace NBA talent every year? Maybe, but that just means you get NBA talent every year.
UNC, Kansas, UNC, UK. These teams don't have to worry about money or support. BAMA will always be Football first. Always and forever. Don't think it matters? Which programs are great in football and basketball year in and year out?

I agree. I'm not convinced Oats wants the NBA.
Calipari didn't.

Hurley won't take it.

Kentucky wants Oats.

We have to bid the salary up sufficiently that they look elsewhere or he is probably gone.

Everyone keeps bloviating about a new building. The building means nothing... NOTHING... without Oats.

Imagine a coach taking Washington to the Final Four in football. You don't think BAMA would give him $10m/year?

Money is money. UK has the money just like BAMA has it for football. If you don't think so, you're crazy.

UK was getting ready to pay $20m to get rid of Cal had he lost again in the 1st round next year. Don't you think??

We're only paying him 4.5. You don't think Kentucky would double that?

Yeah. Let's bet. I'll give you my fricking pudding at lunch if they don't and you can give me yours if they do.

This dude gets it. The pressure to win at UK is ENORMOUS. That comes with BIG dollars.

Basketball is like football at UK.

If Hurley is making $7 mil a yr you think Kentucky going to pay oats $10 mil a yr.

I’ll go a $1k bet on that right now

The difference between Avery Johnson* and Oats is probably 30-40M

Do you think we wouldn’t match?

Salary won’t be why he leaves

Hurley is from New Jersey. UCONN is the fricking school in the Northeast. They're it. They're on the verge of winning their 6th natty.
UCONN isn't even close to UK in expectations.
Yeah, UK will pay their coach $10m and not even fricking blink.

It's like paying a guy like DeBoer $10m+ at BAMA for football. I don't think you understand basketball at UK. They just let Calipari walk. Didn't even try to stop him. That's John Calipari. He's a HOF coach.
