Man if we can just get the defense respectable we are gonna be really fricking good.

As I said yesterday, I don't know if the defense can be improved.

Starter
Sears-Estrada-Griffen-Nelson-Pringle

There is only one defender you can expect here: Pringle.
Because of Griffen's size and position issues, he is good at man-to-man defense against the opposing team's guard, but it is difficult to expect him to play team defense.
The only person we can count on for team defense here is Pringle.
In the first place, the roster structure is not one that can provide good team defense.

Imo the D is going to come around. Team defense is more about awareness and I think as they get more familiar the mental lapses will stop(especially with guys like Stevenson). The big thing is gonna be if Wague can supplant Pringle to give us better rim protection.

So far this year, Pringle has been the 3rd best defender in that lineup IMO. His ceiling on that end is much higher than most on the roster, but so far he hasn't shown us a whole lot.

Nate Oats showed up a few minutes late for his press conference this morning. Apologized and said practice went a little long. "Trying to get the defense figured out"

I feel like this confirms that it isn't just a personnel issue. Players seem to be playing hard (even if they're not as solid defensively as last year's group), but the scheme isn't the same as it has been. Our philosophy on hedging screens doesn't seem to be the same as it was under the previous staff.

My guess is Pannone likes to keep his rim protectors low, but this obviously has allowed guards to go crazy on us thus far this year. When our defense has struggled, it's been the guards (particularly primary ball-handlers) shredding our defense. Couisnard/Oquendo vs. Oregon, Thornton/Gayle Jr. vs. Ohio State, and Swope/Conwell vs. Indiana State. A lot of these teams are just running heavy pick and roll and having their guards take the open shot or taking advantage of our guards digging down off of screens for easy kickouts. Seems like a relatively easy fix, and Oats seems like he's on top of it.

My favorite thing about Oats is that any deficiency I think I see on TV, he's seen a week earlier and is already working 24/7 to get fixed. He does not make excuses and he does not kick the can down the road.
