Watched the highlights today. Granted I didn't see the bad plays but after 1st game, 1st quarter jitters, the team looked good. Need some better blocking from the OL and better tackling from the DL on run plays but overall a 48-0 shellacking was not too shabby. That UTM TD was a bad review by the refs. Not only did the WR step out of bounds before he controlled the ball, but he was still bobbling the ball when he hit the ground.
I'll say this was a good but not great performance. We'll see how much they improve next Saturday.

Can we talk about how Ladd was missing?
Daijun out.
Kendall banged up.
How about how good the 2s and 3s looked when they got in the game?
We looked like shite but I’m not gona look too far into it.

Missing Ladd, MRJS, and Daijun is a pretty big deal for the offense.
Kendall being limited as well.
Just get better each week. That's the key. We sucked blocking inside zone and split zone against Missouri last season. Eventually, we got it right and we were virtually unstoppable (48.5 ppg our last 4 games including post season).

Beck's TD scramble looked like it unfolded in slow motion... and not in a good way.

I liked the scramble.
Ball security scares the shite out of me though.
Brooks Austin is implying that we need to design run for Beck(he didnt say it. Just said Beck isnt occupying backside defenders). We are using a ton of split zone to occupy the backside edge defender. It would be nice to be more versatile (and not be required for a specific playcall to be effective in numbers in the run game).

I think BVG and/or Gunner would be taken seriously as designed run threats.

I think Beck can do them, too.

Not sold on that. He dropped 25% of the balls on runs last year without being touched. I don't want him running the ball.

Coaches will work on ball security.
He is more mobile than given credit.

Beck had 7 carries for 60 yards last year.
That's not enough to make any definitive judgement either way, but it's a possible weapon at the very least.

There is an option for the QB to read the backside end and keep the ball off the dive if the end crashes. Lot’s of offenses use this. The play can be called as a hard run, option, or keeper. As the season progresses, he will likely see the last 2 called situationally. It wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t call them hard dives (not allowing the option) I think we only ran the quick pitch out of that once and it went for good yards. I think Monken, Bobo, and a lot of coaches like to establish the dive as it opens up PA and other plays.
Saw this in the FSU v LSU game. When FSU started getting that dive to work, everything else worked and LSU was playing on their heels .

Watched the full replay this morning. Beck was definitely nervous in the 1st quarter but he settled down as he got time on the field. He was on target with most of his passes and had a few drops that should have been caught.
OL was good pass blocking but not on run blocking most of the 1st half. Better in the 2nd half. UTM stacked the line on run plays but in the 2nd half the run game opened up and passing got better. Or maybe the passing game was better and that opened up the run game.
Backups looked really good on DL and at WR. Nothing to worry about from them this season. Next game will show major improvement.

I tend to agree. Were the drops due to poor throws or just butter fingers?

Lovetts drops were butter fingers.
One Beck threw in the end zone was high and wide. Another Beck miss to Lovett (I think) was behind him. But all will be improved with review and practice.
Cash Jones looked good catching passes out of the backfield.

I watched the full game last night as well and came away feeling better. Other than the head scratching lack of mauling on the OL, almost every other gripe is easily correctable. A few times guys just dropped passes, and a few times Beck just made mental errors that you'd like to chalk up to relative inexperience. I mentiond 3 or 4 such plays specifically in another thread but one I had forgotten about was the quick throw to dom when we were down near the west goal line. UTM never saw dom break out of the huddle so he was lined up all by himself but beck still kinda did the normal process and by the time we got the ball and threw it a defender batted the ball away. I gotta think if that's stetson or an upperclassman wiht a bit more comfort we're snapping it immediatley and it's an easy TD.

"We looked like shite..."
Maybe I'm just a simpleton, but I think waaaaaaaaay too much criticing and negativism, if that's even a word, has been thrown out on this game. We heard the same kind of verbal stoning of the O last season when we put up a measily 33 against that bastion of football greatness, Samford, in game 2 after we prison-raped Oregon in game 1. Then we looked WORSE against mighty Kent State, who put up 22 on our vaunted D (that's more than Oregon, South Carolina and Auburn all scored on us COMBINED) and we only bent them by 17, then a BAD Mizzou team had us on the ropes till Bennett saved us on the last drive.
That team turned out ok, and ended up definitely one of the best teams in UGA history, won a natty and no one even remembers those sub-par performances, do they?
My point? I got this feeling this is all just a waste of perfectly good typing energy for everyone to keep mulling over this game and in a short few weeks everyone is barely gonna remember who our first opponent was in game one.
Just a feelin... but I've been wrong before.
