It's been red flag, and people still go in.

I returned from vacation yesterday visiting the exact beach he died at. We were staying at the Sandpiper Cove in Destin on Gulf Shore Drive. The day we arrived, someone on the beach said a pregnant woman died from drowning on the beach the day before.
I also went out to the farthest sandbar as well, it’s about 70 yards out. I wouldn’t attempt the swim without some sort of floatation device. The water was very deep in between the sandbar and the shore. The sandbar itself was waste deep. Tragic news, I wish I could’ve been there today to possibly help.

Guy was a Hawg great. One of my favorites from years past. RIP

It was enough to make me have a discussion with all 3 of my kids about the dangers of riptide. If it can happen to a former college and pro athlete, it can certainly happen to you.

Very sad.

Flags were yellow today and I think that gave thousands of people false security.

When did double red flags become a thing? I don’t remember them in the 90s or early 2000s. I was always taught red flag = don’t go in the water. Now as an adult, I only go in ankle deep to piss and let the waves wash it off if it’s a red flag.

To me, the double red flags give families a really false since of security when it’s only a red flag.

Hopefully all of the tragedies this month will lead to a little more awareness and save lives.

And they have absolutely no regard for the lives of lifeguards or just bystanders that might try to rescue them. Anyone letting their kids in the water with red flags out should be arrested and fined. Inexcusable.

A retired Fire Fighter from Georgia died saving 2 young girls in distress.

The young girls survived....he lost his life doing what he was trained to do.

I was in Orange Beach in front of Turquoise Place a few years ago when something similar to this happened. A young father in his early 30s had to to in after his 13 year old son who was in the water on a day he had no business being out in the water. Nice but very breezy day with surf conditions far too rough to get more than waist deep in the water. The kid managed
to somehow work his way back to the shore a few hundred yards further down the beach. They never did find the father that I know of.

Double red flags means that the water is closed to the public

My dad and my sister's family went to myrtle beach and the rip current and undertow was bad there too. Pops said he wouldn't go past mid thigh because you could feel it trying to take you off your feet.

This is a horrible way to lose someone and so young my heart goes out to his family but to his coaches and players also. Some of my best most loyal friends are guys I was on staff with because you spend as much time with them as you do your family from June to December.

They just dont know how dangerous it is. Similar to a child touching a hot stove. Once ya know, you know.

Damn. He was one of the earlier guys whos recruitment I followed and actually liked as an opposing QB. This sucks. Sending prayers to his family and Arkansas fans who supported him.

I think it’s definitely a case of ignorance instead of total recklessness. They don’t know what a rip tide is. They think the warnings are just for generally rough surf which they assume they can simply see coming and avoid.

I’m sure the locals understand it a lot better but I can promise you your standard Arky taking their annual trek to the redneck riviera is not well versed in the dangers of rip tides.
