Owners of the restaurant also own the building and are seeking to lease it out to a "national company".

It's currently the oldest restaurant in Athens. Once it closes, that moniker will belong to Strickland's. Although Stricklands has not continuously operated out of the same site like Mayflower has.

We all need to pool together our money that we all have sitting on the sidelines right now and buy that building.

I first ate sizzling steak and french fry platters at the Mayflower in 1967. I was astounded when I found out that it was still there. The waitress brought the sizzling platter out covered by a cloth napkin and I had to wait a couple of minutes for it to stop sizzling.

That place really is special and one of the few connections to my time there that is still the same.

One of the two times I involuntarily slapped my son in the face was at the Mayflower, when he was 2 years old and complained about his food.

The other time was when he talked back to mommy and bang, it's wasn't premeditated, it was just reflexive.

But the Mayflower will always hold a place in my mind for the first time I slapped him.

Not a lot of restaurants from pre 2000 are left. A lot of the Athens restaurants like Steverinos, Sons of Italy, and Mayflower seems closed when the owner retired. My friend's daughter was telling me the kids there now like trendier places like sushi and gourmet burgers so the market has changed.

Blind Pig still around, and I like their downtown location better than the original location that was a shite hole.

Mellow Mushroom still there but I think they changed locations, and because they are a national chain I don't know if they count.

Milledge Taco Stand still there. Downtown rent got too high to sell $2.00 tacos and pbr. But Milledge remains. But even that location is only a matter of time.

The Last Resort still kicking.

Little Italy is still kicking.

In Five Points, 5&10 still kicking.

Peppino's on Whitehall still there. (Teddy Westside corrected me). I was never a big fan of it, but my friends loved the place so I spent some time there.

RIP:

Guthries
Gumby's
Yudy's
China Buffet
East-West Bistro
Harry Bissett's
Rocky's
Transmet (not sure if they make the year 2000 cutoff, but solid and gone.)
Five Star Day Cafe (colossal mismanagement, great restaurant)

One note of good news, Heirloom Cafe in Boulevard shut down, but the building is already leased and/or purchased by the owner of Cali N Titos and they plan to do South American fare.

Like being a recovery agent for a bail bondsman or repo. You never know what kind of situation you are walking into.

One minute you are listening to Matthew Sweet in your 1986 Chevy Celebrity after smoking a joint and finding the address without GPS capabilities, and the next minute there's black people yelling at you and saying mean things when all you are trying to do is give them a pizza they ordered. And then you have to count out change. It was the worst of times, it was the best of times.

Peppinos

Peppino's is still there isn't it? I feel like I ate there semi-recently. We are talking about the S Milledge/Whitehall location, right? It's possible that I am just too young and that there was a previous location I don't know about and the curent Peppino's isn't the "real" Peppino's, or it has shut down in the last year or so?

You are correct. It looks like it's still there. I thought I drove by it a couple years ago and saw it shut down. Maybe it was renovations or covid or some shite.

Times have changed. Your boy start at Ole Miss yet? Are he and his friends into sushi? Do they turn their nose up at cheap pizza and pbr?
